REASONS WHY THE MORMONS ARE LIKELY TO MOVE FROM SALT LAKE.

Some time since a semi-official denial was given to the report that the Mormons contemplated removing from Utah en masse. It was declared that they would never take their departure from a country which, from a wilderness, they had transformed into a paradise. But it seems there is a foundation for the report of their meditated removal. It is said that the great Salt Lake may soon become too large a body of water for safety and convenience. The level of the lake is now twelve or fourteen feet higher than it was in 1847. In the course of seven |years, from the spring of 1861 to that of 1868, the lake increased in area one and a half times what it was in 1852. In proportion as the area of cultivation is extended, the humidity of the atmosphere increases and evaporation diminishes, while the streams from the mountains are gradually increasing. It is said that thousands of acres of farming, meadow and pasture lands have been submerged on the eastern and northern shores of the lake, and should it rise but a few inches above the level of the past live years, unless protected by dykes, many square miles of territory now under cultivation will be inundated. Chicago was burned by fire, and the Mormons may be cleansed by water or forced to take up their residence in some other locality.
