EYRETON WESLEYAN CHAPEL.

The inhabitants of Eyreton are to be congratulated upon the success which has attended their efforts to establish a Wesleyan chapel in their midst. It is a little over ten months since the proposal to erect the chapel was first mooted, and then warmly takea up, so that the managing committee were placed in a position to proceed with the building sooner than they had anticipated. Mr R. M. Wright, of Kaiapoi, volunteered a plau of the proposed chapel, and the tender of Messrs Boyd and Keir of Rangiora, accepted to carry out the work for the sum of £lO5, exclusive of the timber and carting, much of which was contributed by the people of the district. The total amount collected and promised iu subscriptions wa3 £159 7s 6d. The total cost of the building, lined, varnished, fitted with pulpit and seats, £lB5 8s 2d. The chapel is 28 x 18ft of gothic design in wood, and capable of comfortably seating •ighty-five persons. In addition to thereceipts already given the collections taken up at the opening services, which were conducted by Rev R. Bavin, on Sunday last, amounted to £3 3s 9d, and the tea meeting yesterday (Thursday) about £2l ss. The ladies of the congregation provided matting for the floor and drapery for the pulpit. The debt after the tea meeting was reduced to JEI 12s sd, for which Mr J. Evans Brown handed the committee a cheque, thus enabling the treasurer to announce at the meeting that the chapel was then free of debt. The committee had also purchased a sweet-toned harmonium at an expense of £ls 10s. The tea meeting was held on Thursday evening in the district schoolroom and Road Board office, and was unusually largely attended. Table 3 were presided at by Mesdames J. E. Brown, I. Wilson, T. Chilton, J. Davis, H. Martin, H. Beal, and J. Moffatt. The schoolroom having been cleared, a public meeting was held, presided over by Mr Marmaduke Dixon, M.P.O, The room was densely crammed. After a few introductory remarks from the chairman, Mr J. Moffatt, secretary to the chapel building committee, read the report of progress made, noticing the liberal gift of Mr M. Dixon in giving the half-acre on which the chapel stands, and to Mr Wright for presenting the plans and superintending the erection of the building without fee. Revs R. Bavin, H. Bull, and T. Bond, Messrs R. Meredith, and J. Thompson addressed the meeting. At intervals a choir of the members of the Kaiapoi choral class, under the leadership of Mr J. T. M. Smith, gave selected anthems. Mr J. Evans Brown proposed a vote of thanks to the choir, which was seconded by Mr E. Bate. Mr J. Thompson, a similar vote to the ladies, which was seconded by Mr Salter. Mr Isaac Wilson to the chairman, which was seconded by Mr H, Martin, and the proceedings were brought to a close in the usual way. The collection taken up amounted to £2 ITs.
