CRICKET.

LEESTON V ELLESMERE.

The maiden match of the Leeston Cricket Club was played on Wednesday, the 17th inst, in one of Mr Loe’s paddocks, kindly lent to the club for their use, and the creditable state of the pitch reflects great credit on the managing committee. Their opponents consisted of an eleven of the Ellesmere Cricket Club. The head-quarters of this club, which up to the present season has been the sole representative for the last eight years, of the cricketing element in the Ellesmere district, is at present established at Southbridge, although formerly Leeston and Irwell were respectively patronised by them. The game, not being commenced as early as was intended, necessitated the match being decided by the first innings in favor of the E.C.C., with 55 runs to spare, a result which was only to be expected, considering the far better opportunities at the disposal of the victors for practice. The following was the score made: —
