The “ New Zealand (Herald ” of the 9th says A passenger by the R.M.S.S. Cyphrenes, which arrived from San Francisco yesterday, had a very narrow escape from death by drowning on Sunday evening last. It appears that shortly after eight o’clock in the evening a saloon passenger, named Charles H. Delmore, was standing near the companion door on the starboard side of the deck, with several others, chatting; suddenly he exclaimed that the ship was going to founder, and with that he leapt overboard. The second officer, Mr Brown, with three of the crew, with praiseworthy promptitude, lowered the small boat hanging on the davits astern, and, the engines having been previously stopped, by the orders of Captain Wood, pulled towards the drowning man. Though the night was extremely dark, Mr Brown managed to rescue him from his perilous position, and in a very short time had him safely on deck again. The passengers gave three hearty cheers for Mr Brown and his gallant crew on the success of his mission becoming known. From<the time the cry of “A man overboard!” until Mr Delmore was placed on deck again only twenty-eight minntes elapsed, thus showing clearly that no time had been lost in stopping the vessel and lowering the boat, &c. Later in the evening the passenger was sufficiently recovered to be able to return his thanks to Mr Brown, his preserver, and to Captain Wood, for the great kindness he had shown, and for the trouble he had put him to by his Insane conduct.
