Wellington, March 12. Arrived: Phcebe, from Nelson, with the San Francisco mail, at 3.30. She leaves at 4. Flour, £ll to £ll 10s; oats, 3s 7d to 3s 9d ; maize, 6s 6d ; potatoes, £5 to £6 per ton; hams, Is 2d per lb; bacon, Is ; cheese, 7£d. Napier, March 12. The entries for the Napier races on the 18th and 19th were made last night. There are thirteen entries for the Maiden Plate, ten for the Scurry Stakes, five for the Hawkes Bay Stakes, twelve for the Flying Stakes, six for the Hurdle Race, five for the Provincial Produce Stakes, and twenty-one for the Town Plate Handicap. There are seventy-one entries in all. The booths were offered for sale, but no eligible offers were made. Dunedin, March 12. In the district prize firing, in the first set there were fifty-two competitors. At 200, 500, and 600 yards, Sergeant Nichol made 72 points. In the second set there were seventyseven competitors, the ranges being 200,400, and 500 yards. Volunteer Kennedy made 68. The total value of the prizes is £134. DUNEDIN RACES. Dunedin Cup.—Only eleven horses accepted for the Dunedin Cup, all the light weights being scratched. The acceptances are Templeton, Castaway, Traitor, Atlas, Pertobe, Right Bower, Spritsail, Tripolis, Ngaro, Hercules, and Earl of Lynne. Hurdle Race.—Ten horses have accepted for the Hurdle Race, Glenore only being scratched. Steeplechase.—Seven have accepted for the steeplechase, Kildare and Glenore only being scratched. Publicans' Handicap (Acceptances).— Templeton, Pertobe, Barwon, Spritsail, Lyndon, Envy, Tadmor, King Philip, Hercules, Wild Manx Bo.f, Wild Deer, Sir William, Verbena, and Miss Alfred. D. J. C. Handicap.—Castaway, Traitor, Templeton, Atlas, Right Bower, Barwon. Tripolis, Tadmor, Ngaro, King Philip, Lyndon, Hercules, and Gamecock. Master Rowe Stakes—Walter's Pritchard's and Blatch's colts, each two years, and to carry SstTOlb. Town Plate—Right Bower, Castaway, Traitor, King Philip, Templeton, Hercules, and Ngaro. [FROM OUR AUCKLAND CORRESPONDENT.] Auckland, March 11. A trotting match between Perkins' bay Judy and Dornatell's Charlie, owners riding, created a good deal of interest in sporting circles. Perkins won easily. The stakes were £240. It was reported that Mr Mackay intended to contest the Superintendency with Sir George Grey, but this he positively denies. Dickson, the tenderer for the new hospital works, at £15,833, forfeited £IOO rather than take up the contract. Fresh tenders are called for. Sir George Grey's pension as retired Governor is £ISOO, which is suspended while holding any office of emolument. The salary of the Superintendent is only £BOO. A Juvenile Good Templar Lodge of boys and girls of from twelve to sixteen years old ha,s been established. The statement about the plentifulness of gum at Ohinemuri are exaggerated. Parties who went to dig gum have returned disappointed. The miners are much more hopeful. [FROM OUR WELLINGTON CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, March 12. Judge Gillies was sworn in by Judge Johnston to-day. The Australian Mutual Provident Society having £IO,OOO to deposit for a year, invited tenders from the banks for it. The Bank of Australasia's offer of 7 per cent was accepted. [FROM OUR DUNEDIN CORRESPONDENT.] Dunedin, March 11. The harvest in the Oamaru and Waikouaiti districts is the most prolific for some seasons. An average yield of oats of over fifty bushels to the acre is predicted. The escape of the two men employed on a railway cutting from instantaneous death is almost miraculous. A land slip of over one hundred tons of stuff fell, and the men were buried beneath ten tons of it, but owing to the fact that they were working in a hole, the earth formed an arch over them. When extricated, it was found that one was slightly injured, and the other has sustained severe injuries to the chest. To counteract the damaging effects of the Guardian's article, the Southland Railway committee have forwarded for publication to all the principal illustrated papers of Europe and America, photographs of the Hai-bor. The committee declines to thank the Provincial Government for its action re immigration. A man named Alfred Emerny to-day was sentenced to two years and six months hard labor on five charges of indecency before children. In Banco, this morning, Judge Chapman announced his retirement at the end of the month. He presides at Lawrence next week, and delivers a few judgments is Banco. Afterwards Mr Justice Williams makes his debut in Westland, and when Judge Prendergast has disposed of the unfinished business left by Judge Chapman, Judge Williams takes charge of this district. March 12. William Norrie, M.A., formerly of the Collegiate School, Edinburgh, has been appointed rector of the High School. The judge to-day granted a new trial in the case of Macassey v Bell.
