SPORTING.

HURUNUI RACES. This pleasant little country meeting held its second anniversary on Friday, and everything went off most satisfactorily. The attendance was not as large as last year, but the people generally seemed to take more interest in the sport. The programme was not so pretentious as the one issued last April, the races being confined almost exclusively to hacks, and we think the committee acted wisely in this respect, as though the quality of the runners was not good, the large entries and close contests repaid the subscribers and lookers on more than the sight of one or two moderate racehorses and hollow victories. The horses being for the most part of such an anti-public character, we will not weary our readers with a full account of the running, but hope that the Hurunui meeting may now be an established thing, and that from small beginnings, well conducted, it may grow yearly in importance, and prove itself well worthy of the North.
