CHURCH PROPERTY TRUSTEES.

At the last meeting of the Diocesan Synod, a resolution was carried that the benefit of the trust estate should be extended to the whole province and not, as has been the case, confined to the “Canterbury Block.” In order to ordain a bye-law in accordance with the wish of the synod, it was necessary that all the trustees should be present at a meeting, and the proposed extension of the trust should be carried by at least six members voting for it, under the provisions of the Provincial Council Ordinance, 1867. Such was carried out yesterday, at a meeting in the College Library. We hope this long vexed question will have an effect in stirring up Southern Church members to greater activity. The Church Property Trustees have recently purchased up the interest in the leases of section 243, at the end of Colombo street North, and adjoining the town belt, and have decided to let the whole fifty acres in building blocks, the greater number quarter-acre sections. Previous to its being opened for letting, two roads, of a chain in width, are to be made through the whole length of the section, and also some cross roads of the same width. Caledodonian road, which forms one side of the block, is to be widened from its present width, half a chain, to a chain. The trustees have made a reserve of half an acre for church, parsonage, and Sunday school, and the neighbourhood of Knightstown may soon expect to have the services of a minister performing the Sunday services. Reserves have also been made, which if required for public drainage purposes, can be had on terms to be arranged. The trustees some short time back having come into possession of a block of land, about 100 acres, which had previously been let on lease, decided to divide the whole into convenient blocks of five or more acres, and in a very few days the whole was taken up, chiefly for market gardens, and the place is now known as the Village of Verulam, St. Albans. Before letting this land, the trustees, acting in a broad and liberal spirit, set apart six acres for a recreation ground, and we are very glad to record the public avail themselves fully of the privilege.*
