NEWS OF THE DAY.

. * Theatre Royal.—There was a good house again last night at the theatre, and " The Wandering Heir " was well received. Blood Stock fob the Northern District.—lt is understood that Mr Geo. Collier, Leithfield, has purchased the thoroughbred stud horse Sorcerer, which will travel in the district next season The Ram Fair.—Owing to the list of entries not being completed up to a late hour last night we are unable to give the total number of entries for the ram fair, which takes place to-morrow, but we may say that there are a large number of sheep coming forward, both rams and ewes, and the fair of Friday next, should the weather prove favorable, promises to be a great success. Rifle Association. —Several members of the above association met last evening at Warner's Hotel, to consider the advisableness of holding a small bore rifle match this season, and for the transaction of other business After a short discussion, it was decided to adjourn the meeting until Monday evening next, to be held at the same place, the secretary to advise all members in the meantime.

Cricket.—On Saturday next the Tall v. Short match will be continued with the following sides—Tall : Messrs Corfe, E. Fowler, Ollivier, Moore, Monck, Mclntyre, Neilson. Stevens, Stuart, Sweet, Turner, and Watson Short—Messrs Alpe, E. Cotterill, Cuff, Dickinson, Harman, Fowler, J., Fuller, Maples. Souter, Taylor, A. C. Wilson, and Wood. The Papanui v. U.C.C.C will be continued with the same players as on last Saturday. Play in both matches begins at 2 p.m, and it is requested that all players will he punctual.

Interprofessional Boat Kace. —We remind the various professions intending to compete for this event, which will be rowed on the 13th instant, that entries, accompanied by a fee of ss, must be forwarded to the secretary on or before Saturday next, 6th instant.

Canterbury Athletic Club.—A general meeting of this club was held last evening at Warner's Hotel, Mr W. Wynn Williams in the chair. The programme arranged by the committee was re-considered, and some slight alterations made. The secretary, Mr Tosswill, reported that Mr R. J. S. Harman had offered a prize for a 200 yards handicap race, and Mr M. Sandstein, jeweller, had also promised to give a cup of the value of £2 2s, during the association's meeting, leaving it to the committee to fix the race. He also stated that the sports would be held on the cricket ground on Saturday, 20th inst. It was determined to hold another meeting of the club on next Tuesday evening, Oddfellows' Hall. —One of the largest houses we ever saw in Clm'stchurch assembled last night to meet the "Wonderful Girards," as they are truly called, on their first appearance in this city. Any attempt at description of the wonderful performances of the Girard Brothers in impossible, and the entertainment is perfectly unique. We strongly advise every one who has never witnessed the performance of these artistes to go on Friday or Saturday night, as these are the only two occasions in which those living here will have the chance of seeing the entertainment. Mr Valentine Jacobs, too, performs his different tricks with much neatness and dexterity, and his ventriloquism is a success.

Horticultural and Arboricultural Society.—A meeting of the committee of this society was held last evening at the Clarendon Hotel. Mr Guntrip occupied the chair, and there was a large attendance. A number of accounts were passed for payment, and a sub-committee, composed of Messrs Marsh, Turner, Guntrip, Spicer, and Nairn, was appointed to draw up the annual report to be submitted to the general committee at their next meeting. A large number of blooms of gladioli and asters were exhibited by Mr Spicer, some of them being very fine. Mr Jackman also exhibited some very fine marigolds. Some twenty varieties of antirrhinums were placed on the table by Mr Marsh, and received commendation. After transacting some routine business the meeting adjourned.

Annual Sales and Lettings of Purebred RAMS. —The annual sales and lettings of pure bred rams were commenced on Tuesday last by Messrs J. T. Ford and Co. at the Canterbury sale yards. The attendance was not very large, and the biddings by no means as spirited as anticipated. The following transactions were effected : Sales—On account of Mr P. C. Threlkeld, Leicester ram by Scotland, £3, Mr Cross ; do do, £5, Mr Guild : do do, £6, Mr J. H. Anson ; do do (Ist prize show ram, Christchurch), £ll, Mr W. Marcroft ; do do (Ist prize ram), £l3 13s, Mr T. H. Anson ; do do, £5, Mr Guild. Some Lincoln rams by imported rams, submitted on account of Mr W. Marcroft, brought bids up to £lO, £l2, £ls, and £2O, but were passed in at those figures. Lettings—On account of Mr W. Marcroft, six two-tooth Leicester rams, £lO each, to Mr M. S. Campbell; twelve rams, £lO each, to Messrs Fitzroy and Acland ; ten rams, £5 5s each, to the Ven. Archdeacon Wilson ; one do, £3 3s, to Mr Dunbar. A sale of 200 wethers was made on account of Mr Marcroft, at 9s 6d each.
