CRIME IN SWEDEN.
The correspondent of the Pall Mall Gazette at Copenhagen thus writes to that journal:— " I observe in your journal an official denial of my telegram about the repeated attacks on coaches, murders, robberies, and general state of insecurity in Sweden. I beg to enclose a list of the robberies, &c, which have come to my knowledge (there may be still more, of course), during the month of September and the two first weeks of November (I have been unable to procure the papers for the month of October). After a perusal of this list, I trust you will acknowledge that I have only telegraphed you the truth. The total population of Sweden is only about 3,000,000:—On or about September 3rd, the coach carrying Chief Engineer Upmark attacked by a band of robbers armed with guns, and Mr Upmark and the coachman both killed. It was proved to be a regular band, as several cabins were found in the woods close by, and also moulds for melting bullets ; on September Bth, a woman shot dead by robbers at Arod ; September 9th, murder committed by gunshot of a man at Hogsyo. About the same date a Swedish paper acknowledges in a long leader that the security for persons and goods is in a very unsatisfactory state ; September 16th, the band which murdered Mr Upmark attempted robbery at Naisza; September 18th, bank robbery in Oscarshamn; September 24th, according to the Snellposten, the engine driver on a train was fired at close to the station at Frserum; November 2nd. a woman murdered at Malmo; November 2nd, robbery of mail coach from Udevalla, coachman grievously wounded. The robbers had regularly barricaded the road with felled trees. November 4th, attempted murder of a young girl in Stockholm by a pistol shot; November sth, arrest of two persons in Stockholm after violent resistance, the robbers being armed with knives and loaded pistols; November (date unknown), a working shoemaker attacked on the road, gagged and robbed, and attempted drowning, between Yatad and Trellehorg; November sth, death at Jyugkjoping of a young student, who had been assaulted by five men; November sth, murder of a child at Fyellbacka; November (on or about the 12th), death of the coachman of the mail coach robbed on November 2nd; November 15th, attempted murder by a poignard of a woman in Stockholm. Finally, one of the latest numbers of a Swedish provincial paper states that even the poorest cottager is armed to defend his family against t'ne bands of robbers which are infesting the neighborhood.
