THE CAB CASES.
To the Editor of the Glohe, Sir, —It seems very strange that the City Council after asking the cabmen to send in their licenses, and informing them that if five or six of them did so they would open the stands, they should now retract their word and call upon twenty of the cabmen to take out their licenses instead of five or six, because I suppose Councillors Hart and Ick are such influential men in that Council that they will be able to carry that motion on Saturday next. Then again the Council asked the cabmen to attend the special meeting on Saturday last, and informed them that they would then get their licenses, but instead of that, owing to the obstinacy of one or two of the members, the matter has been postponed until Saturday next. What a farce this is ? If the Council wished to gull the cabmen why did they not say so ? IE they wished to act straightforwardly towards them was this the way to do it? I say no! There has been too much humbug, too much nonsense, too many interviews, and too much gossip to bring the matter to a just and proper conclusion, so I think the best thing that can be done is to endeavour to throw oil upon the troubled water ; but I for one should strongly object to allow the public to imagine for one moment that the cabmen are “ caving in.” I am certain that his Worship the Mayor has done his best to conciliate the Council and the cabmen, I feel assured that his actions have met with the approval of the public; but I think he must feel greatly annoyed at the turn matters have taken, and the action of some of the Councillors on Saturday last. Trusting that you will insert this letter for the benefit of the public. Yours, &c., A TOMMY DOI? (
