The barque Mallard, under charter to the New Zealand Shipping Company, sailed this morning, at 7.30 a.m. Her cargo is valued at £52,000, and as she is in splendid trim, there is every probability of her making a rapid passage. The Prospero, for Adelaide, sailed about the same time as the Mallard, a sou'-westerly breeze blowing at the time. There were no signs of the s.s. Phoebe when our express left. She left Dunedin at 6.30 p.m. last night. She leaves for Northern ports to morrow. THE W . W. SMITH. This Teasel was signalled early yesterday morning, and anchored off Rhode's Bay at 8.30 a.m. On arriving alongside all was found to be well on board, and the health officer at once passed the vessel. This is her first trip here. She was previously employed in the East India and China trade; is a ■wooden ship; was built in Jersey in 1857 ; belongs to Jenkinß and Co, and is chartered by the New Zealand Shipping Company this trip. Three years ago this vessel was reclassed for eight years. Getting on board we found that her 'tween decks were occupied by a lot;of long-woolled sheep. Lincolns and Leicesters, and that there were also some on deck. There were 127 shipped in all, viz, 100 Lincolns consigned to Mr Grigg; ten Lincolns to Mr H. Dudding, out of which two died on the passage; four to Mr J. Holmes, two of which were Lincolns and two Leicesters, only the Leicesters reaching port alive; nine Leicesters to Mr J. T. Ford, and four Lincolns to Mr J. C. Wason, all in good health. Five lambs were born coming out, so that as four died on the way, she brings 128, one more than she started with. The sheep are from the flocks of Messrs Cartwright, Dudding, C. and W. Bayles, A. Garfit, W. Guest, Wright of Skeltenthorpe, Robert Howard, and other well known breeders. They are all two-tooth sheep, and are principally ewes, fourteen of them only being rams. They are in really first-rate condition, fit for a show, better far than any that have hitherto arrived from England, many being mud fat. Many of the ewes are near lambing, and it is to be hoped they will be landed speedily. Out of the four sheep that died three were rams. Some of the tanks leaked, and the water was nearly all done when the ship anchored, 2000 gallons having been lost, so it was lucky the vessel arrived when she did. Seven passengers arrived by her. The following is the captain's report:—Left Gravesend on Friday, November 20th, a light southerly wind blowing at the time, with rain. This lasted going down channel, but on the 28th there was a heavy gale from the eastward, which carried away the main bulwark rail and some of the lanyards of the main rigging. Laid too till the gale abated, and took departure from land on the Ist of December, with strong N.W. winds. Caught N.E. trades in 18 deg north, and crossed the equator on the 26th of December. Met the S.E. trades in 1.30 deg north, sighted the Island of Trinidad on the 2nd of January, and ran down the easting in 15 deg to 47 deg; passed the meridian of the Cape on the 2lst of January, and that of Tasmania on the 16th of February, and sighted Stewart's Island on the 20th of February. Had light head winds up the coast, and arrived as above.
