KAIAPOI.

Tuesday, February 23. The ordinary meeting of this Council was held on Tuesday evening. Present; —The Mayor, Crs Porter, Beharrell, Blackwell, Funston, and Milsom, A letter was read from Secretary for Public Works, stating the letter from the Council referring to the planking used on bridge had beon referred to the Provincial Engineer. An application was made by Messrs Birch and Co, for permission to store a large quantity, up to 1000 gallons of kerosene, in a paddock on Meadow road, as they believed such licenses had been granted on payment of a special fee. Eeferred to Fire Brigade committee, with power to grant the permission. A letter was read from Acting-Secretary to Commissioner of Stamps, informing the Council that appointments of k its officers must be under stamp. It was resolved, in reply to a letter from the Eegistrar-General of the colony—•“ That the town clerk furnish certain statistical information asked for.” On its having been ascertained that no reply had been received from the Insurance Association relative to the question of its contribution towards maintenance of the Fire Brigade, Cr Milsom moved, Cr Funston seconded—- « That the town clerk write to Mr Craig, secretary of the Fire Insurance Association, expressing the surprise of the Council that its letter of January 17th was still not complied with.” Carried. Cr Porter drew attention to the state of a portion of Hilton and Black streets, the matter being then referred to the works committee. It was decided that notices be sent to several who had not trimmed fences and permitted trees to overhang the footpaths. Cr Blackwell handed in his resignation as chairman of the protective works committee. The bank book showed a credit balance on the general account of £IOB Is 7d; to the bridge reserve fund account, £2BB 9s 7d. Accounts for a month —Foreman, £6 17s 4d; town clerk, £5 12s 2d; I. B. Sheath, £l9 10s; Austin and Kirk, £7 12s 2d; engineer fire brigade, £4 12s 8d; stamps, £1; labor, £7 4s 3d; total, £SO 0s 7d—were passed for payment. It was decided that all rates in arrear should be collected. The Council then adjourned.
