WRECK OF THE BLENCATHRA.

Writing of the wreck of the Blencathra on King’s Island, the Argus says “ The spot where the Blencathra was lost is in close proximity to the scene of the disaster that befel the Netherby and the British Admiral, and it is a matter of surprise that no lives were lost. The Blencathra is wrecked about three-quarters of a mile to the southward of Currie Harbor, and about three miles to the northward of the reef on which the British Admiral was lost. It is in the second bight south of the harbor, and it is almost impossible to account for her having got so close in shore without falling in with some of the outlying dangers. The whole of the little bay is one mass of blue stone boulders, but at the head of the bight there is a sandy beach of very small extent. The ship has 12 feet of water in her hold, and there is not the smallest probability of her being saved. Should, however, the weather remain fine, the whole of the imperishable portion of the cargo may be saved. On the night of the wreck there was a very high tide, and this, with the heavy swell rolling in, possibly explains the position in which the ship now is. She is not more f han two ships’ lengths from the shore. Her bow is high and dry, and there is no water on her deck abaft the main hatch. The heavy swell, however, rolls over her stern, and should a strong westerly gale set in, she will inevitably break in half. There is a large rock close under her stern which she must have passed over before she struck.”
