CRICKET.

TALL V. SHORT.

This match was commenced on Saturday last. The Short won the toss, and went in to the bowling of Sweet and Moore. J. Fowler and J, Wood were the first to act on the defensive. Runs came slowly but surely, the bowling not being particularly difficult to play. In Moore’s third over, Fowler made a hit to leg for which he obtained six runs, the ball being lost in some long grass near the fence. With the score at 30, Wood was dismissed by a splendid bail ball from Sweet, after making 12. G. Tayler filled the vacant place, and for some time defied the bowlers. A change was tried, Corfe relieving Moore, and E. Fowler going on instead of Sweet, The change at first did not prove effective, but Corfe at last clean bowled Tayler, who had made 14, by a 4, three 2’s, and singles—two for 60. Mr Tipple, a late arrival from England, did not stay long—three for 63, Souter, after scoring 6, gave a chance to Ollivier—four for 74. Boon afterwards Sweet took up the bowling at his old end, and in his first over clean bowled J. Fowler, who had played a fine innings of 39 without a chance. It contained a 6, a 4, three 3’s, and three 2’s. Fuller and Cuff were the next partners, and made a long stand, the bowling not being at all up to the standard. Fuller was the first to go, being bowled by Sweet after making 24, by a 4, a 3, three 2’s, and singles. He gave a very hard chance to Ollivier before he had scored, and another catch to mid-off, but was let off both times. His last two hits were splendid off drives from consecutive balls from Moore ; six for 113. Cuff soon afterwards retired, and the rest, with the exception of Wilson, who carried his bat for seven, did not do much, the inning closing for 123. The Tall then commenced their innings with Lee and Sweet, but the latter after making a three off Fuller, was beautifully caught by J. Fowler at long leg; one for 4. Corfe was next, but did not stay long, being caught at deep long on off Fuller by Tipple, a very fine catch. Ollivier then went in, but soon lost his partner ; three for 23. This did not look well for the Tall, but Moore put a little better aspect upon the score, and caused a change in the bowling, Cuff relieving Souter. The change proved effective, as Moore, in Cuff’s second over, made a splendid cut, very hard, but Wilson, who was fielding at point, was equal to the occasion, and made a magnificent catch ; four for 48. B. Fowler now came in, and with Ollivier played until time was called. Ollivier gave a chance soon after going in, by hitting a short pitched ball to leg from Souter, but J. Fowler, for a wonder, failed to hold it. The catch was not easy. Ollivier was not out for 23, and, for a wonder, there were only two singles in his score, while Fowler’s ten were all singles. The light, when the Tall went in, was very bad. The match will be continued on Saturday next. The following is the score : Short.— First Innings.
