MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday, February 20. (Before G. L. Mellish, Esq, R.M.) DRUNK AND DISORDERLY. Jolm Kelly, an old offender, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment with hard labor as a vagrant. Edward Goodacre was lined ss. DRUNK AND INDECENT EXPOSURE. James Smith, arrested for this offence, and who was suffering very much from the effects of drink, was remanded until Monday. LARCENY. Wm Ryan, charged on remand with this offence, was further remanded until Monday. DISOBEYING A SUMMONS OF THE COURT. John West, who had been remanded for a week on the charge of disobeying a summons for assaulting his wife, was brought up. Mr Reston, chief goaler, said the man was now recovered from the effects of drink, from which he had been suffering. The accused, in reply to the Bench, said that his intention was to give up drink altogether, and get work as soon as possible. He had received a lesson he could not soon forget. His Worship would advise his wife, if he continued to drink, to apply to the Judge to have him placed in the Inebriate Asylum. It was a thousand pities that so clever a tradesman, who might be so comfortable, should be so weak-minded. If the accused would promise to abstain from drink, he felt inclined to give him one more chance. The accused made the required promise, and was discharged,
LYTTELTON. Friday, February 19. [■Before W. Donald, Esq., R.M.] DRUNK AND INCAPABLE. John Moore, arrested by Constable Wallace, was dismissed with a caution. KAIAPOI. Thursday, February 18. [Before C, Whitefoord, Esq, R.M.] POLICE ORDINANCE. James Miles, arrested by Constable Haldane, was charged with having been drunk and found on the premises of Mr R. H. Rhodes in Charles street. Fined 20s and costs, or in default, twentyfour hours’ imprisonment with labor. LEITHFIELD. Wednesday, February 17, (Before C. Whitefoord, Esq., R.M.) SHEEP ORDINANCE. G. H. Moore, Glenmark, was charged with abreachof clause 24 by allowing sheep tostray over boundary. Fined ss, the highest penalty for each sheep and costs. W. Parkerson, of the Weka Pass, was charged on two informations with a breach of the Sheep Ordinance, but the charges were at the request of the Inspector, Mr H. R, Scarvell, withdrawn. CIVIL CASE. Mr Hohden v John Freeman, claim £5 ss; judgment for plaintiff by default for amount and costs. ASHBURTON. Wednesday, February 17. [Before H. J. Winter, Esq, J.P, ] DRUNKENNESS. J. Brady was charged with this offence. This being the third conviction, defendant was fined £5, or fourteen days’imprisonment with hard labor. J. Patterson, charged with this offence, fined 10s, or twenty-four hours. T. James, charged with this offence, fined 20s. or forty-eight hours. M. Millar, charged with this offence, fined 10s. Thomas Davis, charged with being drunk and using obscene and abusive language, fined 10s, or twenty-four hours. Thursday, February 18. [Before H. T. Winter, Esq, J.P.j DRUNKENNESS. Thomas Lynch, Edward Jones, and John Hayes, charged with drunkenness, wereeach fined 10s, or twenty-four hours’ imprisonment. LARCENY. Peter Kelly, on remand, was further remanded to February 26th. Admitted to bail. LUNACY. George Wilkin, brought up as being of unsound mind, was remanded to Christchurch for medical treatment. LARCENY. Charles and Mary Major were brought up charged with the larceny of a cheque. After hearing the evidence of the apprehending constable, and one or two other witnesses, prisoners were committed for trial, but admitted to bail, themselves in £IOO, and two sureties in £SO each.
