MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Thursday, February 18. . [Before G. L. Mellish, Esq., R.M.] DRUNK AND DISORDERLY. J. L. Brown for this offence was fined 40s. DRUNK AND ILLEGALLY ON PREMISES. E. Merrick, arrested for being found at 9.55 p.m. the previous night, illegally on the premises of Mr L. E. Nathan, and insulting that gentleman’s servant, was fined 20s. Wm J. Thompson, charged with being found illegally in a stable at the rear .of the Cambridge boarding house, Kilmore street, was fined 10s. LUNACY FROM DRINK. J. O. Mason, brought up on this charge, was remanded to Lyttelton for a week. WIFE DESERTION. C. Post, brought up on warrant on this charge, was remanded until Friday. LARCENY. William Ryan was charged with the larceny of a ring. Detective Benjamin deposed to the arrest of the prisoner the previous day in High street. Told him he was charged with stealing a ring the property of a man named John McLean, and pawning it at Davis’s pawn-shop in Cashel street. Prisoner, after being cautioned, said “All right, my man. I’ll go with you.” Produced the ring, which had been pawned by the owner after recovering it, at Stewart’s, pawnbroker. The prosecutor had told witness that he had been robbed of two rings in a house on the Sandhills, and four or five pound notes, and having learnt that prisoner had taken one of them he bounced it out of him. Inspector Buckley asked for a remand a? the man McLean was at present at the Ashburton, Remanded until Saturday.
