Grain has come forward freely during the week, and the millers now have sufficient supplies ot wheat to keep them going for some time. Flour has receded to £lO per ton, but it cannot be maintained any length of time at that price with wheat at 3s, which is the top market quotation to-day. English telegraphic advices are most unfavorable, as average samples of New Zealand wheat arefcmly fetching 40s per 4961b5, with every prospect of considerable lower rates ruling- ere long. With the English market in this state it is impossible to make shipments with a reasonable prospect of netting COSt, anil yet there ie no other market to absorb the probable surplus at any price. Bran has been sold at £3 10s. Oats are easier iu value, 2s 9d being the current quotation, but very few buyers are prepared to operate heavily at over 2s 6d. Barley lias been quitted during the week at 4s 3d to 4s (id. Butter is iirm at 9d, and it is expected higher prices will rule ere long. Cheese is steady at (id to «M. Hams and bacon appear out of curers' hands. There has been a fair amount of activity in the import markets during the past week. Stocks have received an increase by the arrival of the Kakaia from J,onrton on the 7th iust; the Lnngston arrived from Wellington on the «*h, «" d , I ,°" d , •"''♦J' wool &c, for London; the Duke of hdinburgh cleared for London on the Bth iust, with full canro of wool, skins, and sundries; the .Mallard and Pleiades are laid on the berth for London, and will have quick despatch. There has not been much done in spirits; the trade sales have been Well maintained srf fair rates ; a few lots of Hennessyß case brandy have been placed at 29s to 29s 6d; bulk has been sold at 9s (id; eld torn, case, 14s 6d to lis 9d; bulk, 5s ; West India rum, 4s 3d to 4s 6(1, 18. Corn sacks are moving freely; several large sales have been made at lis 9d to 12s 6d, according to quality. There Is nothing doing in English hops; colonial growths realise from Is 8d to Is 9d. Cement meets with usual good sale at 225. Galvanised iron—The market almost bare. We hear Of a shipment sold, to arrive, at £35 10s, delivered in Lyttelton. The price here is from £36 10s to £37. There is Jvery little doing in slates, at low rates.
