A royal commission, consisting of Dr Johnston, provincial surgeon and health officer; the Under-Secretary, Mr Cooper, Mr Seed, the Secretary of Customs ; is now sitting to enquire into the conditions under which the Berar immigrants embarked, and the outbreak of disease amongst them. Another death of a little girl has occurred at the quarantine station from the after effects of scarlatina. There are still eighty people detained on the island, Dunedin, February 11. At the inquest on the bodies of the men killed in the Chain Hill tunnel yesterday a verdict of accidental death was returned. The jury recommended that the tunnel be worked with top heading instead of as hitherto. The City Council last night adopted Mr Reeves’ motion that in the event of no satisfactory arrangements to purchase the gas works being arrived at before April, tenders be called for the erection of city gas works. It was agreed to lease the southern part of Princes street for twenty-one years. Invercargill, February 11. At the races there was a fair attendance, and the racing exceeded expectation.
