TRADE OF THE COLONY.
The New Zealand Gazette of February 4th contains a return of the value of the imports and exports for the December quarter of 1874, together with a comparative return of the trade of the years 1873 and 1874, The total value of the imports for the two quarters of 1873 and 1874 was as follows December quarter, 1874 ... £1,859,899 „ „ 1873 ... £1,786,311 The trade of the two years is shown by the following return of the imports : Value during the year 1874 ... £8,121,812 „ „ „ 1873 ... £6,464,687 Showing an increase of ... £1,657,125 The exports for the same period were valued as follows : December quarter, 1874 ... £773,181 „ „ 1873 ... £915,787 Showing a decrease of ... £142,606 Comparison of the exports for the years 1873 and 1874, shews also a falling off. The totals are as follows : Value during year 1873 ... £5,610,371 „ „ „ 1874 ... £5,251,269 Showinga decrease of ... £359,102 An examination of the detailed list of exports given for the December quarter shows that the falling off in exports was principally on gold, New Zealand hemp, and wool, there being also a slight falling of in the value of wheat and preserved meats.
