THE NEW ARCTIC EXPEDITION

. The PallMall Gazette of December.4th '" ■'■'-■ "It has been officially announced that'no officer has been-yet selected for' the comimand of the proposed Arctic Expedition. The Army and jVavy Gazette says that the Lords of the Admiralty are inundated with applications from all classes of officers anxious to join the expedition. They can be [numbered by "hundreds." Admirals Sir 'Leopold McClintock, Sberard Osborn, and : Richards have all been at the Admiralty, and have given the authorities the benefit of } their experience. Two vessels have already 'been selected for- the expedition I —the Pandora at Portsmouth, and the Cblumbine'at Chatham. The Pandora ip 140 feet long, :with 25 feet beam, and at her last measured : mile trial' attained a speed of nino kuots. She has had two commissions, from the second of which she returned just over two years ago* since which time she has been in ithe steam reserve in the harbor. It is understood that she will be planked around with stiff timber, to enable her to successfully resist the pressure of the ice. The Columbine, which has been selected at Chatham, is 160 feet long feet broad, her speed being about the same as that of the Pandora. Slje returned from, the £a»t India station in

May last. In all probability she will be brought round to Portsmouth to be fitted for the voyage, as also will the two Dundee whalers who are to form part of the expedition." In another part of the same paper we find the following:— "Captain George S. Nares, of her Majesty's ship Challenger, has been selected to command the Arctic Expedition, and will return to England from Hongkong by the first mail."
