PEAL OF BELLS.

To the Editor of tlie Globe. Sir, —Your correspondent "Bell Rope " has asked me the questions—lf I am aware "that the public have already subscribed—that the money handed in amounts to a considerable sum," &c, &c. In reply, I beg to state that I am not aware of any money having been actually subscribedforthe above purpose. Ihave heard that considerable sums were promised, but I do not know that the money was collected. If such was the case, I shall be glad if " Bell Rope" will inform me who paid the money and who received it. I will then make it my business to inquire if the amount subscribed cannot be obtained towards completing the peal already so generously inaugurated by our German friends. I think it will be a standing disgrace to Christchurch if we cannot find the funds to purchase five more bells, to complete at least one peal in the city, the merry sounds of which would awaken pleasant memories of old England and the days of our youth. The greatest pleasure I have enjoyed for many years was standing on Princes street bridge, in Melbourne, one Sunday evening, and listening to a peal of bells. If I mistake not, one of the poets has already immortalised a peal of Christchurch bells in the old country. Why, then, should the Christchurch of the antipodes be wanting in that most beautiful and melodious of all the many sensations that the human ear is capable of enjoying. We have already the nucleus of a fine peal; it only requires about £3OO to complete what may be termed a source of public enjoyment, to last for all time. Yours, &c, FREDERICK HOBBS, Mayor. Christchurch, February 6th.
