AUCKLAND REGATTA.
The following short account of the Auckland regatta is abbreviated from the New Zealand Herald of January 30th : Trading Vessels (brigantines, schooners, and ketches), 25 tons register and upwards, First prize, £SO, with a sweepstake of £5 each added ; second, £lO. Clematis, 67 tons, Moller Peerless, 78 tons, Lewis Gem, 29 tons, Watts Little interest was taken in this event, from the fact that there was nothing in the race to touch the Peerless, A strong breeze was blowing from the northward at the start, which took place at 9.30 a.m. The Peerless soon went to the fore, with the Gem towing a dingy in her wake, and the Clematis a long way astern. In this order they passed out of sight round the North Head. The Peerless showed round the North Head on her return at about half-past five, and passed the Flagship at 6.15. Sailing Boats ok Yachts under six tons. First prize, £lO ; second, £5 ; third, £2. Challenge, 3 tons, Odium Bismarck, 5 tons, Eckenberg Colombo, 5 tons, Targett Phenomenon, 2 tons, Kessing Jessie, 4 tons, Elder Victory, 3 tons, J. O’Neill Mystery, 5J tons, Martin Scud, 3 tons, Oliver Quiver, 4£ tons, J. Pollock Alpha, 5 tons, Trevarthen The Phenomenon and Jane did not start. The finish was in the following order : Hrs. mins. secs. Mystery 1 30 Bismarck 1 35 Alpha 1 49 30 Challenge 1 60 30 Quiver 1 15 15 The others were not timed. Trading Cutters, 25 tons register and upwards. First prize, £25; second, £10; third, £5. Start, 27 tons, Diaz Magic, 29 tons, Lombard Sovereign of the Seas, 30 tons, Peterson The Sovereign of the Seas first; Start second, ten minutes behind. TRADING Vessels (any rig), under 25 tons register. First prize, £2O; second, £10; third, £5. Petrel, 18 tons, Cole Four Sisters, 17J tons, M. Ryan Bella, 16 tons, Bassett Eupheraia, 15 tons, Lang Heather Bell, 24 tons, Clark Katerina Borrowdale, 19 tons, Peace Bertha, 15 tons, Lennon Phantom, 23 tons, Carlow Undine, 22 tons. Miller Wave, 20 tons, McDermott Staffa, 11 tons, Campbell Avon, 18 tons, Anderson Australia, 20 tons, Hatfield The vessels passed the flagship in the following order:— Hrs. mins. secs.

Good Templar, 12 tons, Richardson Coutrabandiere, 9 tons, T. Carona S cref, 31 tons, Niccol The spray having rounded the chequered buoy a few minutes after the Daphne, shaped her course for home. Sailed round the Stokes’ Bay b 'at, and came in on the south side of the Flagship at 2 36, none of the other boats b"ing in sight. Half an hour after the Secret appeared leading home, with the Daphne dose up. the remainder of the boats being some distance in the rear. A brilliant race followed between the two cracks, the Secret finally passing the Flagship 45 seconds in advance of the Daphne. The yachts came in as under :
The Spray did not, it appears, go over the same course as the others, and a protest was lodged, but disallowed. Sailing Boats or Yachts, 6 tons and under 9 tons. First prize, £ls or Cup, at option of winner ; second, £7 ; third, £3. Course; Same as fifth race. Alice, 7J tons, Campbell Lizard, 7 tons, Gratten Hit or Miss, 8| tons, Beattie Sabrina, 8| tons, Stodart Hit or Miss 1 Sabrina 2 The Lizard shipped a sea in the Rangitoto Channel and sunk. Open Sailing Boats. First prize, £8; second, £3; third, £l, Helena, 17ft, Radcliff Miranda, 31ft, Peta America, 32ft, Te Hire Lotus, 34ft, Strong Hesperus, 24ft, Jones Brothers, 24ft, Hunt Pembroke, 32ft, G. Strong After the second time round, the boats finished as under:—
The Pembroke afterwards lodged a protest against the Miranda, on the ground that she had a flying start, and did not go round the Stoke’s Point boat. The Brothers also claimed the race by the time allowance. Both protests are under consideration. The rowing matches were postponed through the roughness of the water.
