BOARD OF EDUCATION.

Saturday, Jan. 30, The Board met at 3 p.m. Present— Messrs Inglis (chairman), Gould, Knight, Dnncan, Tosswill, and Maude. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. DAYS OF MEETING. Mr Duncan moved—-That in future the Board meet at 7 p.m. on Monday evenings, all correspondence to be sent in by 4 p.m.on Friday.” Mr Maude seconded the motion, which was agreed to. MALVERN. A deputation, comprising Messrs McMillan and Waddington, waited upon the Board with respect to the school site. The Board, while expressing a strong opinion in favor of there being only one school, and that in a central site, informed the deputation that the Board would sanction the erection of one school only and that in a central position. CLASSIFICATION: The Board of Examiners reported that they had placed Mr L. D. Wright in the third class without fixing the grade at present. PLEASANT VALLEY. It was resolved that the site offered by Mr Hardcastle be accepted and that two acres additional be purchased at the same price. BAST CHRISTCHURCH. A letter was read from the East Christchurch school committee, proposing that the Avonside school should be taken, as all the schools were overflowing. This was proposed as a temporary measure until the large school in Gloucester street was erected. It was resolved—“ That the be allowed to engage the Avonside school as proposed, the committee to report the amount of rent to the Board. The committee further suggested that Mr Ford should be appointed to Avonside with two pupil teachers; Mr Hill and two pupil teachers to Bingsland ; and two additional pupil teachers to St Luke’s. The Board agreed to sanction these appointments temporarily until the new schools were complete, COLOMBO ROAD. A letter was read from the local committee, stating that they had appointed Miss Hall as a pupil teacher, subject 'to the approval of the Board. The Board sanctioned the appointment. The inspector brought under the notice of the Board the bad ventilation of the Colombo road school, which was referred to the committee. WEST CHRISTCHURCH. A letter was read from the committee respecting the unauthorised expenditure on account of school furniture. It was resolved that a circular be issued to school committees, informing them that in future the Board would not sanction any unauthorised expenditure. It was decided that the accounts be referred back to the committee for explanation. The appointment of Master David Lusk as pupil teacher at this school was confirmed. RANGIORA. A letter was read from the local committee, forwarding accounts for sundry works, and a tender for erecting a fence round the mistress’ cottage, from Mr Robinson, which was accepted. YALDHURST, A letter was read from the local committee recommending the acceptance of Mr Gee’s tender for erection of school buildings, master’s house, &c, at a cost of £7OO. The Board decided to refer the tenders back to the committee, the secretary to draw the attention of the committee to the fact that the tenders exceeded the amount voted, TIMARU. A letter was read from the Timaru school committee requesting an imprest on account of maintenance. The Board left the matter in the hands of the chairman to arrange. HILLSBOROUGH. The Board agreed to sanction the immediate carrying out of the additions to this school and that the same be recommended to the Government. The Board then adjourned.
