ROAD BOARDS.

HALSWELL. A special meeting of the Halswell Road Board was held on Monday, January 25th. Present—Messrs Gray, Moffat, and Culliford. The Hon E. W. Stafford, in his absence, was unanimously elected chairman to the Board. The Hon E. Gray was elected chairman pro tern. The minutes of the last meetings were read and confirmed. , It was resolved that as the tenders for making the Hoon Hay Quarry road were so so much in excess of the estimated cost, that the Government be recommended to gravel the portion through the swamp, and abandon .the remainder of the work for the present. Resolved, that foot pipes be used on the Tramway Drain road. . • A letter from the Secretary for Public Works was read, stating that the Government was going to spend the sum of .£2OO in repairing Dyer's Pass road, and that the Port Victoria Road Board was appointed as , agent to carry out the work. Another, with copy of the engineer's •report on the clearing of the River Halswell. Resolved, that a double culvert of onefoot pipes be placed acro3S the Lincoln road above Mr Muff it's, in the place of the old timber one. Resolved, that a man be employed.on the roads, and the road along tne foot of the hills, from Halswell Quarry road to Hoou Hay road, be repaired with broken metal. The Hon E. Stafford was appointed treasurer to the Board. OXFORD. A meeting was held on January 18th. Present—Messrs Paul (chairman), Pearson, Sedcole, and W. Fisher. Correspondence from the Secretary for Public Works was received, informing the Board that Mr W. B. Bray, C.E, had been instructed to proceed to the district for the purpose of examining and reporting upon the .flood water question. From Messrs Rhodes and Wilkin, calling the Board's attention to the necessity of forming a road leading from Oxford to R.b No 8205. Resolved to reply, stating the matter shall be considered. From the Mandeville and Rangiora Road Board, asking for the services of Mr H. Dudding for the purpose o:E pointing out some bench marks in connection with the Rangiora swamp drainage con tracts. Resolved, that Mr Dudding be allowed to go down to Rangiora. The surveyor reported that Mr W. N. Millton of Birch Hill station had remitted a cheque for half the amount; of rate due to the Board, whereupon it was resolved that Mr Millton should have the cheque returned, informing him that the Board would not acknowledge any cheque excepting that for the full amount of rate due. A circular from Mr Henry Wise, Dunedin, was received, asking to be furnished with all particulars of note, &c, in the district, and wishing the Board to subscribe towards the New Zealand Directory. Resolved, that the necessary particulars be given to Mr Wise. Resolved, that Mr Johnson's offer to metal the Main Bush road be accepted, and that he should proceed with the work as soon ao convenient. Resolved, that the paysbeet, amounting to £147 19s sd, be paid.
