A man named Igo entered the house of a laborer named Woods, who was sitting on the doorstep reading, and struck him on the head with a tomahawk. He then rushed into the house, saying he would kill everybody in ■ it, A policeman heard the noise, and arrested him. Igo declared he meant it. COLONIAL PRIZE FIRING. Geahamstown, January 25, The firing commenced this morning at half-past six o’clock, with the first cavalry match, judging distances. The morning was dull, and rain was expected, but it cleared up about eight o’clock, but soon got dull again. The day was cloudy, there being no sun. A slight rain fell at noon, but the weather was favorable for shooting, being better than too much run. The firing commenced with the Judging Distance Cavalry Match, seven shots at ranges chosen by the commanding officers. There were fifteen competitors. The first prize, value £ls, was won by Hedge (Waikuku), with 23 points ; the second prize being secured by Keys (A.C.), and the third by Barriball (Waiuku). Skinner, Grundy, and McLeod fired off a second time, each making a - centre, and they again fired, Skinner 1 made 2, taking fifth prize, and McLeod 1 sixth prize. t Grundy made only an outer. The ranges at which above match was fired, measured after contest, were 193, 259, 309, 356, 408, 573 yards. Second Cavalry Match, 400 and 600 yards, commenced after dinner, and resulted in the , following scores : Pollintz, 41 points, first prize. S. Barriball, 37 points, second. A, Barriball, 35 points, third. The Infantry were served out with day’s ammunition, and went to practise at ordinary rifle range. The firing to-morrow is for the Third Cavalry Match, and the Second Infantry, commencing at half-past six.
