MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Monday. January 25. (Before G. L. Melfish, Esq., R.M., and his Worship the Mayor.) INDECENCY IN THE DOMAIN. James Alexander alias William Haynes charged with this offence was fined £5. INDECENCY IN GOVERNMENT PARK. Agnes Hawes alias Elizabeth Howell, arrested for committing an offence of this nature, was sentenced to one months’ imprisonment with hard labor. BURGLARY. Philip Green was charged on remand with breaking into Thomas King’s house in Montreal street south and stealing two coats therefrom. Mrs King stated that previous to going to bed on Thursday night last she fastened the two back doors, and the door leading from the pantry to the room where the coats produced were hanging. They were both hanging on the same nail. j The lean-to where the coats were is a portion of and leads into the house. The prisoner was fully committed to take his trial on this charge at the next criminal session of the Supreme Court. ATTEMPT TO COMMIT SUICIDE. John Finlay was charged with this offence. Mr Parkersou, Rouse surgeon at the Christchurch hospital, stated that defendant was admitted to the hospital on the 25th October last, suffering from a wound in his throat, where had attempted to cut it. He would like to mention to the Bench that the defendant had been severely suffering from a stricture, and he was in such a state of agony, through retention, that he may not have known what he was doing when he committed the act. Since he had been in the hospital he had been a very steady, quiet man. Charged dismissed. DRUNK AND DISORDERLY. The following inebriates were fined 5s each:—Hugh Cowan, John Dixon, John Farrell, and Wast Parker ; and Samuel Morris was fined 10s. VAGRANCY. Henry Elliott was arrested on this charge. Constable Strong stated that his attention was called on Saturday night, about a quarter past ten o’clock, to accused, who was lying in a right-of-way off Kilmore street groaning. The accused told him he had no home to go to, and he took him to the depot, Mr Revell stated that the accused had been twice received into the Charitable Aid Home, and had left it each time. Sentenced to one month’s imprisonment.
