NEWS OF THE DAY.

N. Z. Shipping Company.— The annual general meeting of this company will take place at Mr C. Clark’s rooms on Thursday next, at eleven o’clock. Union Rowing Club. —A general meeting of the members of this club will be held at Warner’s Hotel this evening, for the purpose of selecting crews to compete at the Heathcote regatta. Accident. —C, Tarendale, in the employment of Mr J. Walls, Kaiapoi Island, was thrown from a horse on the North road on Friday, and sustained severe injuries to his face. He was found by Messrs Pashby and Wright lying on the road in an insensible state from loss of blood, &c. He was removed and attended to. Teaching Swimming in Schools— At the usual weekly meeting of the Board of Education held on Saturday, the question of teaching swimming in schools was brought under the notice of the Board by a letter from Mr L. E. Nathan, referring to the late accident at Sumner. In a colony like this, where all are subject more or less to chances of accident in crossing rivers, &c, the instruction of boys in this useful art is most important, and well worthy the attention of the authorities. The Board, while thanking Mr Nathan for his letter, did not see their way to carry out bis suggestions,

Fine Arts.— Mr T. S. Cousins has just completed a life size portrait in oil of Mr Abrahams, the founder of Oddfellowship in Canterbury, which, as a work of art, is creditable in the highest degree, and will be recognised atonce by those who know thesubjectas asplendid likeness. The frame, which has been manufactured by Mr H.' Fisher, is also worthy of note as as a colonial production, being one of the largest ever turned out here. The picture will be on view in a few days. Muff Cricket Match. — A muff cricket match between an eleven of the Union and Heathcote Rowing Clubs, against an eleven from the Canterbury Rowing Club, was played on the cricket ground on Saturday, and created considerable amust merit, both to the on-lookers and combatants. It must he stated that Biakiston and Revoll on behalf of the C.R C. showed rather too much knowledge of the game to be included in the category, and the consequence was that while they held the wickets, the united team had rather a lively time of it, caused through eagerness to catch the ball. The following are the totals made:—D.R.C. and H.R.C.,first innings, 37; seconds innings, 63 (two out). Total so far, 100, G.R.C., first innings, 77. On the Union side Messrs Glassford and Clark were very effective. It is hoped that by next Saturday week the majority of the two elevens will be able to put in an appearance, when it is intended to finish the game.
