THE INTERPROVINCIAL CRICKET MATCH. [communicated.] The match committee have not yet finally selected the Otago representative eleven, but we understand the following will constitute their choice : —Allen, Downes, J. C. Fulton, Glen, Godby, Kettle, Lambert, Paramor, Reade, Sampson, and Tait. We now offer a few remarks on each, taking them in the order in which their names are given. Allen will no doubt take the wickets, a post which, we feel assured, he will fill creditably. As a bat we do not expect much from him., although he may with luck obtain a double figure. Downes will probably captain the team, and if in bowling form, is bound to get wickets. He, like Allen, is a batsman more lucky than correct. J. C. Fulton is a good bowler, having considerable headwork. He is an energetic field, and has a good style of batting, with lots of hitting power, but is somewhat unfortunate. Glen, as a bowler, ranks next to Downes. His pace is pretty hot, and his average would show up well were he to use his head more. Smart field at slip, but no bat. Godby has been singularly unlucky in practice matches this season. He is undoubtedly a fine bat, but lacks patience, fields well at point, covering lots of ground, and a fair change bowler, with a puzzling break from leg. Kettle is in excellent practice, and will certainly make a score. Though nervous at first, his defence is strong, with good all round hitting powers, when he warms to his work. Fields well at long leg and coverpoint. Lambert will fill up the important post of longstop, and will let no byes. He hits hard to the on, but is wanting in defence and very apt to get l.b.w. From Paramor we expect great things, although we fear his bowling will not tell so well on Hagley Park as on Kennington Oval, still we know he is good for a score. Read is the best all round man in the team, safe for runs, excellent anywhere in the field, and a fair change bowler. From Sampson we anticipate a score. He combines strong defence with considerable hitting powers. He is also a safe and active field, with a smart return. Tait is a fair change bowler, straight but simple. His batting capabilities are not great. A moderate field. The above represent a strong bowling and fielding team. Batting is certainly the weak point, but that, too, is strong compared to what it has been of late years. The Otago men leave here in the Taranaki on Monday. ♦ C.C.C. v Papanui CO.
