AN HEROIC STATIONMASTER.

A most gallant act was performed the other evening by the station master of Port Glasgow, Mr James Hughes. As the four o’clock train had just come into the station, two well-dressed men, having got their tickets, attempted to cross the rails as the 4.30 from Greenock was also coming into the station in the opposite direction. One of the men fell across the rails. Mr Hughes at once saw the danger, and amidst the shrieks of the onlookers rushed after them. Seizing one he threw him on to the side of the train standing on the down side, and lifting the other he tossed him alongside his companion just as the buffer of engine touched his coat tails, and held them there in the narrow space between the two trains until the one stopped, when all danger was over. Those who witnessed the daring deed highly complimented Mr Hughes on his gallant conduct after the trains had passed away, as it is beyond doubt that at the risk of his own life, he save those of the two men, who, in their confusion, slipped away, perhaps too much stunned to thank their benefactor.
