CRICKET.

THE WORLD V. PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND UNIVESITIES. This match was commenced on Saturday last. The World were the first to act on the defensive, Messrs Ollivier and Wood being their first representatives, and Messrs Lee (north end) and Sweet (south end) took up the bowling. Ollivier gave an easy chance to long leg off Lee but escaped, but in Sweet's third over a beautiful catch at short slip dismissed Wood; one for 11. J. Fowler then joined Ollivier, and a good stand was made, which was at last brought to an end, Ollivier being well caught at third man by Wilson; two for 33, of which the retiring batsman claimed 13, made up of two 3's, two 2's, and singles. Fowler and D'Emden raised the score to 60, when the latter put up an easy catch to mid-on. He put together 18 by two 3's, three 2's, and singles. J. Fowler retired without any alteration in the score, having made 13, in which was a good square leg bit for 4. E. Fowler was splendidly run out by a brilliant piece of fielding between Messrs Sweet and H. W. Moore. Souter soon made his total, when he returned a ball to the bowler; six for 72. T. R. Moore then went in, and made a 3, a 4, and a 2, and was then bowled; seven for 84. Fuller hit freely for his 10, making two good drives, for which he obtained a 3 and a 2, but they should have been a 4 and a 3; eight for 96. At 98 Mclntyre was clean bowled by Sweet. Watson, who played in his usual steady style, was next to retire, Lee finding out his weak point; ten for 106. Turner had a short but merry innings before Sweet found the way to his wicket; eleven for 114; each side playing twelve men, but having only eleven in the field. With as little delay as possible the World took the field, Fuller commencing the attack from the lower end and F. R. Moore contra. Wilson and Lee were deputed to break the bowling, but after two singles had been scored Lee gave Ollivier a chance, and had to retire. Four runs and a wide resulted from T. R. Moore's first over, and then Wilson gave a chance off Fuller, but Ollivier let it drop. In the next over, however, Moore bowled Wilson off his leg, 2 for 11. After making a single, Loughnan was splendidly caught at short slip by Moore. When the total had reached 18, H. W. Moore, who was playing very well, was bowled by a grand ball from Fuller, the ball working well from the leg and just taking the off bail, A good catch at the wicket dismissed Dawe, and Condell soon afterwards was bowled by Fuller, having played a careful innings of 7; Monck did not alter the score, being also bowled by Fuller, 6 and 7 for 23. Sweet gave a difficult chance before he had scored, and after making 3 runs was badly missed by WOOd at long on. The time for drawing stumps had now arrived, the Public Schools and Universities having made 26 for the loss of 7 wickets. The fielding was very fair, but two or three catches were badly missed. H. W. Moore and Fuller were very successful in bowling, the latter being particularly so, getting no less than 5 wickets for 7 runs. The following is the score : The World.
