HOME RULERS IN CHRISTCHURCH.

The following is an extract from an article bearing the heading " All the World Around" which appears in the Nation of November 7th. It will be interesting to many of our readers as showing that we must go from home to hear the news:— "Not alone in America, not alone in Australia, are the exiles of the Irish nation pressing forward to cheer on and sustain the men who here at home uplift the old flag and fight the old battle of our race. To-day from iVew Zealand we receive a right welcome message to tell that there also faithful and true men h&ve determined to stretch out a helping hand to the movement for their country's freedom ! The following simple and touching letter tells its own story:— Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand, August 29, 1874. A. M. Sullivan, Esq., M.P., Dublin. Sir—Though personally unknown to you, I have ever since a child heard your name prominently mentioned in connection with all movements having for their object the elevation of Irishmen and the emancipation of the " old sod." For this reason I venture to communicate the following:— A little while ago a move was made here by a true Kerryman, Mr Dinnahan, for the purpose of raising a little money to aid the supporters of Home Rule in Ireland, of whom there can be no better type than yourself. This good and patriotic son of Old Granuaile met with such success, and the movement with so much sympathy from his countrymen, that he determined to form a committee for its better management and place in their hands the amount collected by himself. This committee, of course, comprised all Home rulers in their way, and elected Mr Daniel M'Guinness chairman and treasurer, and your most obedient their secretary. The treasurer has in his possession something between £4O and £SO, which they hope greatly to augment as soon as they hear from you. I have been directed thus to inform you, and to request you to let us have as much information as possible as to how the movement is progressing, in order that we may acquaint the subscribers and so induce others to contribute. We intend forwarding you the amount collected as soon as you reply to this, or to any person deputed by you to receive it.' Wishing the Home Rule movement God speed, and hoping to hear shortly from yoit, I have the honor to remain, dear sir, your most obedient servant, Edward O'Connor, Secretary Home Rule Committee, Christchurch, New Zealand. All honor and grateful praise to those truehearted Irishmen of " Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand !" If neighbour, relative, or friend there still be in Glanerought, or Iveragh, or Clanmaurice,or Dunkerron,of that "true Kerryman," Mr Dinnahan, or elsewhere in Ireland of Mr M'Guinness and Mr O'Connor, let them claim the fact with honest pride. Ireland can never die while her children thus fondly cling to her memory. Highly as the Home Rule leaders may value the steady and loyal sustainment of the millions of our race who still tread and hold —for they mean to hold—the native soil, far dearer still must they prize these demonstrations of the loving fidelity and generous spirit of the Irish race in exile !"
