COURTENAY.

The Board met at the office, Courtenay, on Monday, January 11th. Present —Hon Col. Brett, Messrs Cardale, Gough, Mathias, and White.

Mr Mathias proposed, Mr White seconded, “That Colonel Brett be chairman for the ensuing year.” A letter was read from J. Fielding, of Dunedin, asking for information about the Courtenay Road district, as he was publishing a New Zealand Directory. I’be surveyor was directed to forward the information required, and state that the Board would take a copy of the Directory when published. The surveyor was also directed to write to the Secretary for Public Works asking for a tracing of the Courtenay district, corrected up to date, as the Board intended having the same lithographed. Also to write to the Secretary for Public Works, and ask that a road might be laid off from road running by Bevelly’* and Mauion’s, at Kimberly, to the

Junction Station, the same having been applied for before, in July last. Also to write to the Secretary for Public Works and ask that the reserve on the western side of the Southern Railway, from Weedon to Kolleston, might be banded over to the Board for road purposes. Also to write to Mr Creyke, the owner of most of the land fronting the river Waimakariri between Courtenay and Kimberly, asking him to sell the Board certain portions for drainage purposes. Also to write to the Rakaia Road Board informing them that the road between Region’s and Clinton’s, at Greendale, has.been formed and the river bed levelled as far as the Courtenay boundary, and asking them to continue the road across the Selwyn. The surveyor was also directed to make out a rate list of 6d in the pound of all rateable properties in the District, and have the same ready for the next meeting of the Board. Also to write to all persons having gates crossing roads and acquaint them that for future anyone wishing to erect a gate across a road must first obtain permission of the Board ; that the gate be well hung, and shall consist of one gate twelve feet wide, or two gates six feet wide each, painted white, and to have small block to fasten to, not exceeding two inches from the ground ; gate to fasten to block with bolt, and to hare cap rails on fence half-chain on either side. All these conditions to be carried out on or before llth April, 1875. The surveyor was also directed fot the future to use a three-inch ring for road metal, and on no account (unless otherwise directed) to pass any metal exceeding this. That all pits must be stripped to the satisfaction of the surveyor before any metal is taken out. The pay sheet having been adopted and passed, the Board adjourned to Monday, Feb. 22nd,
