COMMERCIAL.
Taking into consideration this week being the last of the month, and Friday a public holiday, the business done in the import markets has been far above the average. The foreign arrivals have been the Geraldine Paget and Crusader, from London, on the 26th and 31st ult, both bringing immigrants and well assorted cargoes of general merchandise. The ship Dorette cleared lor London on the 31st ult, with full cargo, consisting of wool, skins, tallow, hides, pelts, &c. Sugars have met with ready sale at full rates. Several lines ol Mauritius have been sold at the following rates:— "White crystals, £34 15s to £36 10s; counters, £34 10s to £35; yellow crystals, £34 to £34 15s ; yellow counters, £3O to £3l LB. Teas have met with ready sale at full market rates, best congous realising Is lOd to 2s LB. Hennessy's pale brandy meets with good sale at 9s 6dto 9s 9d; Kartell's dark, 9s 6d; Hennessy's case 29s 6d to 30s LB. Geneva meets with usual trade sale, no large sales to report, ltum commands 4s 3d to 4s 6d for 10 and 20 o.p. Sales have been made in old Scotch whiskey at 7s LB. Ales and Stouts do not move oil"as fast as importers could wish; best brands are quoted at lis 6d to 12s per doz. Tobacco meets with good Bale at Is Bjd to Is 9d lor best twist; aromatics (low iu stock) are quoted at is lOd to Is lid LB. Oilmen's stores meet with the usual amount of attention at lull market rates. Kerosene is dull. Wehave only trade sales to report at from 2s to 2s 2d D.P. Price 8 Belmont candles have met with a fair amount of attention at lid. Standard ironSeveral sales have been effected in this line at £l7 to £lB per ton. Woolpacks move off in small lots at 4s to 4s 3d. Ccrnsacks have not as yet met with much attention, a few sales have been made at 12»6d to 13s. Galvanised iron—Best brands are low in stock, £35 los to £36 has been obtained for clearing a line. Cement commands good sale at 23s here, or 22b in port. The demand for this article is 'v&f^cea^.'"
