BOARD OF EDUCATION.

Monday, December 28. The Board met at the usual hour. Present —Messrs J. Inglis (chairman), Gould, Tosswill, and Knight. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. BUSINESS DONE BY THE CHAIRMAN. The business done by the chairman during the week was read and approved. Among other business it was discussed and resolved that the replies to applications from new districts for schools would have to stand over until the Provincial Council meet. CHRISTCHURCH. A letter was read from Mr Duuuett requesting that his application to be examined might be withdrawn, as his medical advisers did not approve at present of his going through a course of study. Resolved to forward the letter to the Board of Examiners. LE BON’S BAY. A letter'was read from the district committee, asking for a quarter’s house rent for the master as his house is not yet ready. Request granted. MEMO, FROM SUPERINTENDENT. His Honor the Superintendent forwarded a memo, enclosing an application from a Mr Cooper, desiring that he might be permitted to teach his system of book-keeping in the various district schools. The Board resolved to write his Honor that they thought it undesirable to comply with the request. SCHOOL EXAMINATIONS. A letter was read from Mrs Ross, requesting that the school might be examined by the Government examiners. It was resolved —“ To allow Mrs Ross's school to be examined by the inspector,” TIMARU. The following letters were read : From Miss Griffen, asking that her salary might be increased ; from Miss Forbes, respecting rent in lieu of house ; from the master of the school, informing the Board that he is an under graduate of the Melbourne University ; and from Mr Mahan, appointed temporarily at Timaru, asking for a permanent appointment. The secretary was instructed to write to Misses Griffen and Forbes, that all matters relating to finance are under the consideration of Ihe Board. MEMO. FROM PROVINCIAL SECRETARY. A letter was read from the Provincial Secretary a iking the chairman of the Board to state who was responsible for the late robbery of cash from the offices of the Board. A letter was read from this committee, stating that the meeting of householders to electa committee had lapsed through wet weather, and asking the Board to appoint a day for the election of a committee. The Board appointed the 14th January, WAIMATE. A letter was read from the chairman of the district committee, asking that the scale of payment to teachers might be increased. Consideration of this matter was deferred. PAPANUI. A similar letter to the foregoing from the Papanui committee was also deferred consideration. LOWFR HEATIICOTE SCHOOL. The consideration of a letter from this committee, asking for an increase of salaries to teachers, was deferred. KOWAI PASS. A letter was read from this committee forwarding plans of additions to schoolmaster’s house for approve!. The plans were approved and the committee authorised to call for tenders. WOODEND. The chaiiman of the district forwarded estimate of alterations to school and master’s house, amounting to £llO. A portion of the alterations asked were approved. HILLSBOROUGH. Estimates and plan for the enlargement of the district schoolroom were forwarded by the chairman of the committee. The Board approved the plan, and decided to recommend the Government to sanction this expenditure. FLAXTON. A letter was read from the chairman of the committee asking that the Board would pay ono-half of the rent of a cottage which the schoolmastei had been obliged to rent as the house provided for him is too small; also forwarding resolutions passed at a public meeting in favour of the removal of the school. The Board decided to accede to the request of payment of rental, and the Government would be recommended to sanction the expense incurred in erecting a new school. WINCHESTER. Plans and specifications for additions to this school were forwarded by the district committee for the approval of Ihe Board. The plans were approved, and the Board decided to recommend this expenditure to the Government, TOUT LEVY. The chairman of the district committee wrote that it was considered that the plan forwarded by the Board for a school house was on too large a scale (18 x 30), and suggested a smaller school. The secretary was instructed to write that the Board does not think it desirable to build a smaller school. It was also decided to ask the Government to place a sum on the Estimates for the erection of a school in this district. MOUNT GREY DOWNS. It was resolved to recommend to the Government the expenditure for the enlargement of this school, according to plans submitted. *■ KAIAPOI. The appointment of Mrs Soulsby as assistant mistress of this school was confirmed subject to her coming up for examination in January. The appointment of Miss Hookham was confirmed. PREBBLETON, On the recommendation of the district committee, the tender of Messrs Cook and MeClintock was approved. The tender for the master’s house was accepted, and it was resolved that the expenditure for the school buildings be recommended to the Government. HEATHCOTE VALLEY. Estimates were forwarded by the committee for alterations and repairs to school; It was decided to recommend the expenditure (except for wash house) to the Government. PIGEON BAY. Estimates were forwarded by the committee for additions to school, and to master’s house. It was decided to recommend the Government to sanction ths expenditure. LINCOLN. The chairman of the committee wrote that the tender of Mr J. Buckstone, forwarded, for additions to the school, had been accepted, subject to the approval of the Board. The Board sanctioned the acceptance of the tender. SUMNER. A memorial was read from the inhabitants of Sumner, asking that it might be appointed an educational district. It was resolved to recommend his Honor to accede to the request. GUST. Estimates were forwarded by this committee for a new school to be erected, necessitated by the increased requirements of the district. The secretary was instructed to ask for further information, and it was decided to recommend the expenditure to the Government. YALDHURST. Plans were forwarded by this committee for erection of schoolroom and master’s house. The plans were approved, and the secretary was instructed to write that, as soon as the site is conveyed, the committee are authorised to call for tenders for the work, TAX TAPU. The application of the committee for a gymnastic apparatus was acceded to. SWANNANOA. The application of the committee for permission to have a portion of the school land broken up, and the gorse cleared, was acceded to. PAPANUI. A letter was read from the committee, asking that some alterations in fencing, &c, might be aullur'.sed. Resolved—“ That this expenditure be recommended to the Government.” RUSSELL’S FLAT. The chairman wrote stating that a tender for repairs to the school had been acce( t d, subject to the approval of the Board. The acceptance of the tender was confirmed. WEST CHRISTCHURCH. A letter was read from the district committee asking for sheds to be erected at the Lincoln road school, and other improvements to be made. Resolved to recommend the expenditure to the Government. WAIMATE, Estimates for addition to school and master’s house were forwarded. The secretary was instructed to write for pi ms of proposed additions to be forwarded tor the Board’s approval,

’ASHBURTON. An application was read, signed by a number of inhabitants in the Ashburton district, asking that a new educational district might be proclaimed, to be called Netherby. The Board decided that there was not a sufficient number of children in the proposed district to recommend the Superintendent to proclaim it. WAINUI AND FRENCH FARM. The boundaries of these districts were considered ; and also the application for the erection of school buildings. It was resolved that the boundaries be recommended, and that the Government be asked to place a sum on the estimates for the erection of school buildings in both districts. HALKETT. Plans and estimates for additions to this district school were submitted, and it was resolved to recommend the expenditure to the Government. After transacting some further routine business, the Board adjourned.
