CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday, December 29. (Before G. L. Hellish, Esq, R.M.) DRUNK AND DISORDERLY. James Spiers, charged with drunkenness, was fined ss. John P. Meehan, who had repeatedly been convicted of drunkenness, and charged with a similar offence, was given a last chance and discharged with a caution. DRUNK AND CREATING A DISTURBANCE. Thomas Gardiner, arrested for fighting opposite the Caversham Hotel, and violently resisting the police, was fined 10s. Joseph Haskett, charged with assaulting and obstructing Constable Hughes when he was arresting the prisoner Gardiner, was fined 40s. ILLEGALLY ON PREMISES. George Lankaster, charged with being found illegally at the back of the Railway Engineers office early that morning, was discharged with a caution. DRUNK AND USING OBSCENE LANGUAGE. Annie Osborne, against whom a charge of drunkenness and using obscene language in Peterborough street, was proved, was fined 10s. VAGRANCY. Patrick Byrne was charged with this offence. Sergeant Wilson stated that the prisoner went to the depot the previous night and asked for a bed ; when told he could not get one there, he refused to leave, and said he was destitute and unable to work. He (witness) had often seen the man loafing about, and believed him to be a thorough vagrant. The prisoner said he had received an injury to his limbs, and was unable to work. He was entirely destitute. Sentenced to one months’ imprisonment, with hard labor.
