ROMANTIC SWINDLING.
A German tailor, named Haramelmann, who had spent a portion of his life in Spain, was sentenced to three years’ imprisoment at Hanover for obtaining money under false pretences. Whilst in Spain he assumed the name of Don Alfredo Carlos de los Santos, and corresponded with one or two German generals, from whom and others he obtained suras of money for raising a treasure concealed, as alleged, undtr the following circumstances : - Shortly before her fall Queen Isabel had commissioned Don Alfredo de los Santos to buy 20.000 breech-loaders, and given him her cheque for 2,180,000 f, which was duly cashed. Meanwhile the daughter of Marie Christine lost her throne, and our knight of the needle felt rather embarrassed with the trust. Hegelian philosophy, however, taught him that “ Alios was ist, istgat," and he therefore resolved to hide the £95,000 in various places over Europe, which he said were marked by him with a black cross and the word “ Misterio ” three times repeated. These signs were discovered on a house in Vienna and a milestone near Carlsruhe, which the swindler had meanwhile visited. The consequence was a golden harvest in the shape of remittances from £SO downwards from credulous speculators.
