ARRIVAL OF THE CLAUD HAMILTON AT THE BLUFF. [Reuters Special Telegrams.] Bluff, December 11. The Claud Hamilton left Melbourne at 6 p.m. on the sth and arrived at the Bluff at daylight on the 11th. She brings thirtyfour saloon, and thirty-five steerage passengers ; 280 tons cargo for all ports. She sails i'or Dunedin at 5 p.m. Passengers for Lyticl tun —fWuim —Miss—Todd, Mr J. Joyce, Mr Williamson, Rev Hoinersham, and nine in the steerage ; 100 tons of cargo. Prussia, Dec. 1. Bismarck, in speaking in Parliament, declared that the policy to be adopted towards Alsace and Lorraine, would be solely guided by the interest of the Empire. Paris, Dec. 1. The Assembly has met but the proceedings were merely formal. All parties agreed to defer the Constitutional Discussion until January. London, Dec, 2. The attendance at the sales is declining and competition becoming languid. Sixty thousand tales have been sold and two thousand live hundred withdrawn. The Budget speech delivered b/ the Treasurer, was well received, London. Captain Strachan Governor of the West Africau Settlements, assembled the chiefs at Cape Coast and delivered to them a message from the Queen, expressing the determination of the British Government to abolish slavery. The chiefs assented, but stipulated for permission to retain their actual slaves if kindly treated. The steamer La Plata with the South American Cable foundered off Ushant. It is feared that sixty persons perished. The benches of s Inn have unanimously disbarred Dr ICeiiealy for his conduct in the Tichborne case.
AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Melbourne, Saturday, December 5. The Parliament has clone some good work in the matter of practical legislation, but the subjects dealt with have mostly been of local interest. The Payment of Members Bill has passed the Assembly, and reached the Council, where notice has been given for a call of the House for its consideration. The Judicature Bill passed the Assembly; it contains a clause providing tor grand juries in certain criminal cases. Attention has recently been aroused to the gross evasions of the Land Act, and an amendment of the existing law is loudly called for. A writ has been issued for Richmond, and two candidates are in the field, viz, L. L. Smith and Bosisto. There are rumors as to the probable and early resignation of Judge Fellows. The population of the colony at the end of September was 803,000. Mr Ducane, late Governor of Tasmania, proceeds to England to-day by the steamer Northumberland. He received quite an ovation onleaving Hobart Town. Yesterday he was present with Governor Bowen at the Parliament and Press Cricket Match, and made a most admirable speech. The match was won by the Press easily. A severe shock of earthquake has been felt in the Gippsland district early on the morning of the 30th November. Mining machinery was stopped, underground workings displaced, and articles fell from the shelves. The shocks lasted over an hour and a half. The Macgvegov, ,\vith the Cab'foinian mails, reached San jjranciaco on of November. The Normanby, with the Torres Straits mails, left Eatavia on the 25th November, having been detaiued five days for the Sr.ez steamer. The Suez mail steamer Ceylon is expected to reach here abaifc next Saturday, the 12th :„:t.

Land in Collins street recently sold for 400 a foot. Madame Ristori's agent has engaged the Opera House for next August. Great prepai-atious are making by the Catholics for the reception of Archbishop Goold. Measles is very prevalent all over the colony, several schools,being closed in consequence. The Garrison Artillery are bivouacked. The old Grammar school boys intend presenting Pr Bromby, bead master, with a of 330 so vs. The Conference of Stock Inspectors, held at Sydney, recommences that the prohibition on the importation ol cii/de from Europe, be rescinded. Sydney. Owing to an adverse vote on the Govornors mi.iuie respecting Garf.bier's release, parliament has been hastily die solved, and the Wilts have been for new elections, all returnable on the 25 bh of January. Educational reform is to be made the prominent topic of the emotions, and already the Denominational defence society and the Education league have the v candidates. Arnold is unlikely to offer himself for the speakership, and Allen will probably be nominated. King Kakabau has arrived in Sydney as the guest of the Governor, and was accorded an official landing. H 3 is very anxious to visit Melbourne. The Governor has presented him with a yacht in the Queen's name. F. McCallum sentenced to death for the death for the Circular Quay murder, has had his sentence commuted to imprisonment for life. Mr Parkos has issued an address, but announced nothing more than was contained in the Governor's speech at the opening of Parliament. Adelaide. Mr Ernest Giles is about to proceed, per Elder, on an expedition to Perth, proceeding to the southward of Forrest's route. COMMERCIAL. Breadstuffs firm and likely to rise ; flour, £l2 10s; wheat, os lOd; oat?! inactive demand at 5s to 53 4d : He m««-y'a bra-idy hardening, 8s beieg asked, but sales have been made under that figure. The s jocks are running low of Henncisy's ca.se brandy. Sugars are firm at an advauce of 15s per ton, owing to a telegram of r.dvices f:om the Mauritius of short shipnent to the colonies. Teas improved, there being large buyers. Candles and dried fruit are in gooa request.
