CHRIST'S COLLEGE.

ANNUAL EXAMINATION. The annual distribution of prises for the Christmas examination took place last oven? ing, at the College Library, when the Eight Rev the Primate presided. The room was well filled with ladies and gentlemen, and the boys themselves occupied the gallery and other parts of the room in great force. The Primate in addressing the boys said that it gave the Governing Body great pleasure to find that so satisfactory an examination had been passed by the. boys of the school as had been the case on the present occasion. The number of boya at the school was now 149 ; last year there were 126, thus showing an increase in the numbers which was satisfactory. Of these it was also noticeable that they boys from other provinces to the following extent, viz. : —Otago, 9 ; Wellington, 12; Nelson, 8 ; Greymouth, 1 ; Napier, 1. Of course when other provinces obtained institutions within their borders such as that, they could not expect boys to come to them from them, but it was satisfactory at the present time to note that the College received boys from the other provinces to educate. Then, as to the poaitiofi taken by the scholars of that school in competitions, he would point out that in the competition for the university scholarships in classics, where only four were offered, two were taken by their scholars—viz, Reeves first, and Gould third. In English, where only two were given, both were taken by Christchurch College boys—viz, Reeves first, and Milton second. For the Government scholarships two had been taken by their scholars, Barclay and Deamer, and the Gould scholarship by Hartland. Going still further, at Oxford old college boys had also been successful, Willmer having succeeded in taking second-class in moderations, and the Lucy scholarship. While at Cambridge Q. Bell had taken an exhibition at St John|s. The Primate concluded an earnest address by informing the boys that the Governing Body had granted a week longer holidays, an announcement which was received with loud and continued cheers. The Primate then proceeded to distribute the prizes according to the following list:— Classics—Sixth form, Atack, 1; fifth form (upper), Hay; fifth form (middle), Barclay; fifth form (lower), Williams; fourth form (upper), Woodman; fourth form (lower), Merton; third form (upper), Cotterill II; third form (lower, Scott ll,' Taylor, Stafford; equal; remove, Beswick, - •'.'''
