THIS DAY'S TELEGRAMS.
Wellington, December 10. It has been intimated to the Government that the Governor desires to land in Wellington as quietly as possible. The .Mayor and Corporation and several members of the General Government will meet his Excellency on the wharf, and an address of welcome will be presented to the Governor, who will then drive to Government House. Lemon, the General Manager of the Telegraph Department, received the following message from the telegraphist at Queenstown : —" Pleased to inform you that Professor Peters, the American astronomer, has been very successful in taking observations of the transit of Venus here." Messrs Dransfield and Moorhouse are both candidates for the Mayoralty of Wellington. Dunedin, December 10. The Port Chalmers Naval Brigade have fired for representatives. Wilson made 91, and Goldie 88. New Plymouth, Dec 10. At the firing of the volunteers for representatives, G. N. Curtis made 86 points, being the only one of the volunteers who qualified. The Waitara steamer has returned from Touaporutu and reports the river difficult of access, and the channel narrow and shallow. The natives, however, are very friendly. Captain McCarthy has been examined by the Collector of Customs relative to the collision between the ketch Wild Duck and the schooner Merlin on the Waikatobar.
