Auckland, December 9. The sky is overcast with drifting and heavy clouds, broken here and there. It threatens rain, and is very unfavorable weather for observing the transit of Venus. The cutter Rose, Home, master, has been seized by the Customs' authorities for having on board three ten gallon kegs of spirits, not on her cargo lisb. Wellington, December 9. The celebrated Marawhenua Gold Mining case has been concluded in the Court of Appeal, but the Court intimated that judgment would not be given probably till the next Court met. Dunedin, Dec. 9. The City Guards and Portobello Rifles (four men each) have tired in the final set, but only Nightingale of the former, with 85 points was qualified. Operations have been commenced at the Kaikoura Woollen Mills. The Licensing Bench by a majority have decided that they had no power to grant night licenses. Mr Haggitt pointed out that a difficulty would thus arise, and suggested that one application be withdrawn, the person to keep open after ten, and the police to proceed as a test case. The Bench concurred in the suggestion. Port Chalmers, Dec. 9. Arrived—Beautiful Star, from Timaru, and Friendship, from Hokitika.
