AQUATICS.

COMPETITION FOR THE REV. J. O’B, HOARB’S CUPS. The competition for the cups presented by the Rev.'J. O’B. Hoare to the members of the U.R.C. took place last evening over the mile course. The racing was for pair-oars with coxswains, and considerable interest in the racing was excited in aquatic circles. The sporting and cricketing interest, as represented by two prominent members, was the favorite, but the pot boiled over, and they had to be content with second honors, though pulling a game race. The telegraph crew" was too much for them, and “ wired in” to such an extent as thoroughly to do up the bails and saddle repixsentatives. The second heat, a contest between the soft goods and mercantile was a closer thing, though a slower race, and ultimately resulted in a victory for the mercantile gentlemen by about a length and a half. The final heat will be pulled at New Brighton on Saturday week. The boats used were the Una, U.R.C., and Moa, C.R.C, the latter being kindly lent by the Canterbury Club for the occasion. Mr Henuah acted as judge, Mr Crosbic as starter, and Mr Glassford as umpire and timekeeper. The following was the result of the heats : Pair-oared Race. One mile. Prize cups presented by the Rev J. O’B. Hoare. FIRST HEAT. Moa, R. F. Houlihan, bow ; Geo. Wright, stroke ; Broker, cox 1 Una, F. H. Digby, bow ;T. S. Sweet, stroke ; M'Dougall, cox 2 A capital start was effected, the Una taking the lead after a few strokes, when a hot race ensued to Herdson’s corner, when the Moa got on even terms. Through misjudgment of the coxswain of the Una the stroke oar here rowed six or seven strokes in wet mud, thereby decreasing their lead. The Moa then drew ahead, increasing her lead after getting through the bridge. Up the reach all had evidently had enough of it, though the Moa kept the lead and won by 16sec, Time, 9miu 53sec. SECOND HEAT. Una (J. Drake, bow; O. E, Stewart, stroke ; MoDougall, cox) 1 Moa (A. Sharlaud, bow ; J. Black, stroke ; Hanley, cox) 2 Both boats got away on even, terras, and for the first quarter of aj mile the Moa led. Off Herdson’s a fine tussel took place until reaching Cowlisbaw’s corner, where Una, having inside place, secured the advantage of the turn, and took the lead by two lengths. From here she began to draw ahead, and despite the plucky efforts of the Moa crew, who pulled excellently, succeeded in winning a capitally contested race by sixteen seconds. Time, 10 min 23 sec. The final heat will be pulled on Saturday week, at New Brighton.
