SMART CAPTURE OF A DEBTOR.
The South Australian Advertiser tells a tale of a very smart recovery of an account from an absconding debtor. The latter had taken his departure from Adelaide for England by the Hesperus; and the creditor, learning that the vessel was becalmed, chartered a tug-boat and started in pursuit. The Hesperus was at this time fifteen miles from port. Just after the tug-boat had started a breeze sprung up, and the Hesperus with a crowd of canvas set was seen to be making headway on her voyage; but the creditor, a Mr King, determined not to lose his money. A full pressure of steam was put upon the tug-boat, and as the wind soon fell light again, it was enabled to overhaul the ship. The captain of the Hesperus at first refused to allow any person to come on the vessel, as he was more than three miles from the land, but on the affair being explained to him he altered his mind, and Mr King was admitted on board. As that gentleman had come armed with the necessary wa'rant and a bailiff, the debtor had no choice but to pay the money, or return to Adelaide in the tug-boat. He selected the former alternative, and Mr King soon afterwards reached Adelaide, not only with his account paid in full, but also with nearly the whole cost of chartering the tug-boat.
