ROAD BOARDS.
SPREYDON. A meeting of the Spreydon Road Board was held on Tuesday, December Ist. Present all the members. The clerk reported that he had enquired at the Charitable Aid Office, and learnt that Mrs Hadfield was receiving charitable aid, and the Board remitted her rate. The surveyor’s report upon the culverts in the district was considered, and new ones directed to be put in, A letter from the Secretary for Public Works was received, intimating that the sum of £295 had been forwarded to the treasury for payment. One from Mr Harvey, complaining of a nuisance existing near his place. The clerk was directed to inspect and give notice to the proprietors to abate the nuisance. The surveyor was authorised to take proceedings against any person wilfully riding or driving any animal on the Lincoln road footpath, A report from the sub-committee on the Heathcote and Spreydon drainage was read. The report of the provincial engineer on the drain was read, and after being discussed, Mr Dunbar proposed that the drainage committee be empowered to confer with the Heathcote Road Board, or any committee appointed by that body, on the subject of the Heathcote and Spreydon drainage, and to take such steps as may be deemed necessary in conjunction with that body. Carried unanimously. The clerk was directed to advertise the annual meeting of ratepayers to take place on January sth, in terms of the Ordinance. The clerk was directed to inform the Government that earth for filling up the gravel pit on Windmill road can be taken from the Board’s pit. The Board then adjourned.
ELLESMERE. The usual monthly meeting of the Ellesmere Road Board was held in the Road Board office, Leeston, on Tuesday, December Ist. The following members were present— Messrs 0. J. Bridge (in the chair), J. Rennie, H. Knyvett, and R. Lockhead. The following letters were then read:— From Alex. Brackenridge and two others, requesting the Board to. repair one chain of Lockhead’s road at the crossing of the tramway, T. Dixon offering to find the necessary shingle. Granted. The overseer was authorised to finish the road opposite Taylor’s. From W, J. Alexander, asking the Board to clear about 20 chains of side drain on Ridge road. Granted. From Mr Thomas Cannon, asking the read from Cryer’s gate to his gate to be formed. The Board decided to form the main road immediately, and the remaining portion applied for on the usual terms. From Mr M. R. Ashwin, asking the Board to repair the road in front of section No. 6719. The overseer to report at next meeting. From David Stewart,. Doyleston, calling the attention of the Board to the’ encroachment of gorse on a portion of the Drain uad. The overseer was instructed to serve notices in all cases where he deemed it necessary. Mr James Moor applied for a bridge across Ludeaan’s drain, offering at the same time to do. the necessary labor. Granted. The Board to find the timber, Messrs D. Buckley and Miller applied for another drain on Buckley’s road, as it was impassable during the winter months in consequence of the accumulation of water. The overseer was instructed to report. Mr T, H. Dodd applied for a special rate to be levied to defray the cost of effectually clearing and deepening the Tamutu Creek. The overseer was instructed to prepare a list of properties affected by the overflow of the creek. A petition read from Patrick McCabe and two others applying for an approach to the Boggy Creek bridge, on the East side, by widening and deepening the ditch on the Lake road for about ten chains, and offering to do one third. Granted. Application was made to the Board by Mr Smith, barrack-master, Southbridge, for permission for two families from the barracks to occupy the cottages at Leeston. Granted. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr James Mcllraith for his liberality in giving a large quantity of gravel for metalling the Ridge road. The overseer placed before the Board a list of those persons indebted to the Board for their contribution to work done. The overseer was instructed to make application for the same, and in case of the amount not being forthcoming, to inform them that the same will be sued for. The overseer was authorised to purchase 5000 ft V.D.L, at 225; to have posts and rails placed in places that might seem to him to be dangerous throughout the district; to advertise for tenders for sinking the drain on the branch drain road, and widening and deepening the main drain and metalling the road from J. McLachlan’s to the Railway Station. The overseer’s report was read and considered, showing that the balance in the bank amounted to £1192 18s sd. A letter was read from the Secretary for Public Works, informing the Board that the third instalment of £1628 15s had been forwarded to the credit of the Board. Paysheet amounting to £322 10s 7d w*>s examined and passed for payment, and the meeting adjourned to the Ist of January, IS7O,
