ROAD BOARDS.

SPBINGS. A meeting of this Board was held in the office, Springston, on Tuesday, the 24th. Present—All the members, Mr B. Curry in the chair. The following, correspondence was read : From the Secretary for Public Works, in reply to the Board, in reference to the clearing of the Birer Halswell, stating that a copy of the specifications will he furnished to the Board, Also that a second inspection will shortly ho mnde by the Provincial Engineer, and a y uf his report will be sent to the Board. A letter from the Assistant Provincial Secretary, in reply to the Board requesting to have a mounted constable stationed in the district, stating that the matter referred to will be duly considered by the Government. It was resolved that Mr Jno Gilmour be allowed 2s per yard for the extra 50 chains shingling done by him on Gould’s road. That application be made to the Commissioner of Police to have a mounted constable temporarily stationed in the Springs district during the harvest and shearing time.. That the surveyor be instructed to have 300 yards of stone quarried, and advertise for tenders for delivering the same. That Mr J. L. Blair’s offer for delivering 7000 ft of timber from Little Biver at 8s 6i per 100 ft be accepted. The.pay sheet, amouritiner to £758 6s lOd, was passedand ordered to he paid , Tb'e Board then adjourned'toTuesday, the 22nd December, at U a,m.

SOUTH RAKAIA. This Board met on Thursday, 19th instant, to consider tenders for the formation of the Main Rakaia road from present terminus to Allen’s upper boundary. There were present Messrs , Wasou (chairman), Cos er, and Alington. . The tenders were numerous, and being considered, one was accepted at seven shillings and ninepence (7s 9d) per chain. The formation adopted being the half chain formed or one side of the Chain reserve. As the immigrants appear prejudiced against the sod cottages, it was resolved to make a difference in the rental of them as compared with the wooden cottages. Applications for possession of cottages coming from persons other than immigrants, were refused. It was resolved — l< To purchase a tipeart, horse, harness, feed, &c, and to employ the team on the road in conjunction with the road gang.” “That the surveyor estimate the cost of reducing the hill at the back of Mackie’s to a still easier gradient, say one in eighteen.” “That the contractor be requested to stack a sufficiency of gravel, extra, on the formed works made by the road gang-, to cover the whole width of formation six inches deep.” The pay sheet was passed and paid. The report and rent sheet of collector was passed, and the Board adjourned to Thursday, 17th December.
