CRICKET.

PAPANUI v. LEITHFIELD. On Monday last a match was played at Leith field between the Papanui and Leith* field teams. The weather was very much against cricket in the morning, and this accounted for so many runs being scored by the Leithfield men in the first innings, it almost being impossible to field. The Leithfield were the first to take up the defensive, and were not disposed of till the large score of 102 had been put together. Bundle with 36, and Beam with 24, being the highest scorers. The Papanui then went in, and only succeeded in making 43. In the second innings of the Leithfield they were not displaced until 48 runs had been put to their credit, Turner being the highest scorer with 28, making a total of 150, leaving their opponents 108 to make to win; but in the second innings Papanui only succeeded in making 27, Triggs being highest scorer with 13. The bowling of Turner and Shelmerdine was excellent, the long-stopping of Mason being especially creditable. For Papanui, Matson, Horner, jun,, and Davis bowled well. In the evening a dinner was given to the visiting team, provided by Mi Baldwin, of the Royal Hotel, which deserved credit. After dinner the usual toasts were duly proprosed, and drank with great enthusiasm ; and the Papanui men left greatly pleased with their day’s outing— but not pleased with their play; The following are the scores : LEITHFIELD.
