POPULAR ENTERTAINMENT ASSOCIATION.

A meeting of the committee of the above association was held yesterday at the City Council Chambers. Present —His Honor the Superintendent (in the chair), Messrs Walkden, Mitchell, G. Gordon, and Wynn Williams. Mr Wynn Williams moved—“ That Mr Cuff be requested to act with Mr Walkden in obtaining the necessary materials for the sports and in assisting the committee to prepare the ground. Mr Mitchell seconded the motion, which was agreed to. Mr Gordon said that he had been requested to apologise for the absence of the Very Rev the Dean of Christchurch, who took great interest in the work of the committee, but was prevented from attending owing to a prior engagement at the same hour. The chairman said he desired to explain that the reason he was absent from the last meeting of the committee was that he had a meeting at his own office on the same day. A letter was read from Mr C. James, Prov C.S. of the Oddfellows,’ stating that the order intended having a fbte at Rangibra on the 16th December, so that they would not be able to take any part in the proposed Richardson’s show at the sports. A letter was read from Mr A. Ingleson, expressing himself as surprised at the letter written by Mr Ness to the effect that the Friendly Societies thought there was not time to arrange for a Richardson’s show. He stated that the agreement made by several members who had been spoken to was to the effect that the same arrangement should be made as last year, viz, the committee to provide all the necessary requirements, and to receive half the gross proceeds. The committee considered the letter, but were of opinion that it was too late to entertain the matter at all. A letter was read from Mr Eugene Beda, stating that it was his intention to give an entertainment on Latimer Square, and asking that a site should be allotted to him. The request was agreed to. The secretary was instructed to advertise for tenders for the erection of a grand stand, and for a band during the day ; also for sites for refreshments and other arrangements. The programme of sports was referred to a committee, with instructions to report at the next meeting. The meeting then adjourned,
