ROAD BOARDS.
HEATHCOTB. This Board met on Thursday, November 19th. Present:—Messrs Fisher (chairman), Attwood, Ness and Dunlop. The clerk had received £l6 lis id -rates." Resolved—" That the Board comply with the request of the City Council, tc meet them at the Council Chambers re drainage, and that the chairman and Messrs Dunlop and Mardon, with the Board's solicitor, attend." Letter from the City Council, stating the half cost of forming and metalling a portion of the East Town, belt would be £75. To be informed, the Board will be prepared to pay half the cost of the work on a tender being accepted by the Council. Eesolved—" That Mr Sycamore be written to, informing him he must be more expeditious in carrying out his contract, and also to screen the shingle better." Mr Leatham waited on the Board re Sumner road, when the Board agreed to pay him £3OO, and the balance to be paid on receipt of certificate of Government Engineer. Mr Jones waited on the Board re drainage of the East town belt, and was informed the Board were negotiating with the City Council in the matter. Messrs Berry and Burrell waited on the Board re obstructions to roads on sections 1148 and 4075, Sandhills. It was agreed the matter should be attended to. Mr Papprill waited on the Board re Sandhills road, and was informed the matter would be attended to in due course. Besolved —That the Government be requested to proceed with the survey of the river roads as soon as possible, the Board being unable to carry out the necessary works until the survey was definitely settled. Letter from Mr Courtney, complaining of the bad state of the drainage on Hayward's road* To be attended to. From Messrs Joynt and O'Niell, solicitors, claiming on behalf of Mr J. Eennie £IOO damages for alleged trespassing on his property fronting on the River Heatbcote road. To be informed the Board can't see it, but after the Government, who are about to survey the said road, have definitely settled the boundary, and it is proved to be wrong, the Board will have no objection to make good any damages (if any) Mr Rennie may have sustained caused by its action in forming the road. Letter from the Halswell Road Board, agreeing to pay half the cost of repairs to Dyer's Pass road. The foreman was instructed to get on with the work. From Mr Deßourbei re i'hillips Town, to be informed the Board cannot take charge of the roads referred to until they are formally dedicated to the Superintendent for the use of the public. The clerk was directed to write to the Government, asking them to pay to the Board's credit the balance of ordinary grant, General Government Grant, and balance of quarry Roads Grant, as the Board is paying interest for an overdraft. Accounts to the amount of £440 10s lOd were passed for payment, when the {Board adjourned. ELLESMERE. A special meeting of the Ellesmere Road Board was held in the Road Board Office, Leeston, on Friday, 20th instant. Present— O. J. Bridge, Esq (in the chair), Messrs J. Rennie, G. B. Woodman, and J. Lockhead. Tenders as under were accepted for the respective works advertised by the Board :
Metalling Jol lie's road, at Is ll£d per yard ; ditto Oyer's road, at Is SJdperyard; forming O'Nfiil's road, at 20s per chain ; ditto Bong's road, at £1 Us fld per chain; earthwork approaches to Hart's Creek Bridge, £ls ; metalling, 2s per yard. Applications were received for the various emigrants' cottages within the jurisdiction of the Board, and the same were duly let at reasonable prices.
