The Opera.—" Satanella" was played last evening to a capital house, and went excellently. Miss Alice May as Satanella, sang "The power of love" charmingly, and and was equally successful in the ariettas occurring in the slave market scene. Miss Lambert, as Leila, was good, and Miss Howe • played the Princess Stella creditably. Mr • Hallam's Rupert was very successful ; his singing of 'An angel form" particularly, being very good. We have before spoken in. . terms of high commendation as to Mr Ternpleton's Arimanes, and last night he sang even better than before, having evidently got greater confidence in his own powers. •'. Mr Vernon made a capital Hortensius, and ' Messrs Levison, Lester, and Mitchell, in their respective parts rendered good services. We • omitted to notice the incidental ballet in the: slave market scene, which was Tery nicely danced by Misses Johns, fester, and John- - ston. As a whole, the opera went capitally.. . Acclimatisation.—The salmon which were recently removed to the Avon in a cage have been taken down to New Brighton to receive the benefit of the brackish water The fish were all strong and healthy, aud had evidently improved. The experiment may, therefore, be considered a success so far. Whether the fish will thrive during the hot summer months in confinement in the salt water near the Avon is the important experiment yet to be tried. CIIRISTCHUECH HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. —A special committee meeting of this society was held last evening at the Clarendon Hotel, Mr W. Wilson, president, in the chair. The judges' and secretary's reports on the late show were read. A vote of thanks was accorded to the committee of management. Mr Chudley, in reply to the vote, said that he thought the society's marquee should be enlarged. He also believed that lines of standards and rope 6 should be fixed at future shows to keep visitors away from the exhibits, and mentioned that some fruit shown by Mr Sisson had been stolen. Mr Crooks moved, " That the Rose Show be postponed until 3rd December, in consequence of the backwardness of the present season." Mr Lee seconded the motion. Mr Stevens objected to the postponement, as although the majority of exhibitors might not have ro3es ready, others might, •and an injustice would be done to those persons. He would prefer to hold the show on the date already fixed, and have a second one in a fortnight. After considerable discussion the following resolution was carried : —"That the rose show be held in Mr W. Wilson's new rooms, at the corner of High and Cashel streets, on Thursday, 3rd of December; the alteration of date being purely exceptional, aud entirely occasioned by thi backwardness of the season ; and that this committee is of opinion that the date of any future rose show should not be fixed before it can be known whether the season is early or late." The president exhibited for inspection of members soma excellent specimens of Cloth of GoUl roses, Rose de Meaux, and Geant des Battailes ; some specimens of green, scarlet, and white ixia ; Tabriena imbricata, scarlet Pyrcthrum, and Clematis azurea. The committee then adjourned.
