SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

EAST CHRISTCHURCH. A meeting of the East Christchurch District School Committee was held on Thursday week. Present—Mr W. H. Wynn Williams (chairman), Revs H. C. M. Watson and W. J. Habens, and Messrs Packer, Mitchell, and Kirk. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Leave of absence was granted by request to Messrs Dymock and Jameson. Letters from the Board of Education were read relating to certain matters of detail and sanctioning "the action of the committee at its last meeting, and stating that the Board would recommend the Government to purchase the land adjoining the South town belt school site offered by Mr Wilkin if the Provincial Council voted the necessary amount at its next meeting. It was resolved to request Mr Wilkin to keep his offer open till then.

The sub-committcca appointed to visit the Music Hall, South town belt, and St John's schools brought up their report. A letter from Mr J. B. E. Taylor, master at the Music Flail, was also read, bearing on the makers reported by the sub-committee, and stating that Mr C. F. Exall had come to study the art of school keeping, and seeking the committee's sanction. It was resolved to obtain the additional furniture required at the Music Hall and St John's schools. The consideration of the question of accommodation being deferred till thedeputy inspector s reportson the same subject were read. With reference to Mr Exall, it was resolved that Mr Taylor be informed that the committee decidedly object to any one being allowed to teach in the school without their (the committee's) consent being first obtained.

The secretary was instructed to reply to an application from Mr Exall for an appointment as assistant teacher.

The sub-committee for the South town belt school reported that as far as possible without furniture, &c, the school was well arranged, that more teaching power was required, and that immediate attention was required to levelling, draining, fencing, &c. It was resolved that the fencing be proceeded with at once, and Mr Mitchell was requested to get some temporary levelling and draining done at once, and generally to keep a supervision over the works required to be done. The chairman was also requested to ascertain particulars as to cost of asphalting all round the building ; also to procure a small lavatory for the use of the teachers.

Mr Hammond's reportson the Music Hall, St John's, and South Town Belt Schools were read.

It was decided that the accommodation at the Music Hall was sufficient, atanyrate till after the Christmas holidays. With a view of relieving the over-crowded state of St John's, it was resolved that the chairman and Mr Mitchell be requested to endeavour to arrange for the use of the building known as St Andrew's old girls' school. It was resolved to advertise for two male pupil teachers for the Music Hall, two female pupil teachers for St John's, and two for the South town belt school. The chairman reported that Mr Hammond had told him the ventilation at the South town belt was seriously defective. It was resolved to request Mr Farr, the architect, to report on the matter ; also as to the best means of throwing open the partition at present existing between the two rooms. The meeting then adjourned.
