SPORTING.

THE MELBOURNE CUP.

Melbourne, November 12

On the Cup day 75,000 people attended. The weather was delightful. The struggle this year terminated in a ridiculously easy victory for an outsider. The spectacular effect transcended everything seen on former years. An excellent start was effected, the colors of The Arrow, Protos, Goldsborough being seen on the left, those of King Tom, Speculation, Lapidist, Kettledrum in centre, and Diver wide on extreme right. Leaving the training ground the Arrow’s head was in front, Kettledrum second, Goldsborough third, Speculation fourth, Haricot lying next, the Diver (far outside) fifth. Passing the Stand Kettledrum supplanted Arrow at a strong pace, Goldsborough close behind, with Speculation and Haricot close at their heels, the Diver next, Protos heading the ruck, Dagworth being at the end of it, King of the Ring a dozen lengths behind him. Pounding the turn by the riverside the Arrow and Kettledrum were running side by side, and Haricot by this time forged into third place, Goldsborough fourth, Cleolite fifth, FitzVattendon and the Diver next, King of the Ring still whipping in at the riverside. Haricot then shot to the fore, increas'ng his lead every stride. He was ten lengths to the front before reaching the railway bridge, the Arrow going second, the Diver little further having run to third place. Passing the bridge the Arrow, Goldsborough, and the Diver were running side by side, and Protos began to improve his position, but at the Abattoirs Haricot increased his advantage twenty lengths, and the Diver, leaving Tait’s two, went in pursuit of him, Protos following suit with the Arrow, Goldsborough and Break o’ Day after him. At the Sheds the Diver had decreased the gap between himself and the leader. As they entered the straight it was imagined he was going to catch Haricot, but Greville net being strong enough to make the most of him, he died away, and Protos headed him by 100 yards, but failed to catch Haricot, who won by four lengths, Protos beating Diver by a neck for second place ; King of the Ring came with a rush at the finish, and just beat Break o’ Day and King Tom for fourth place. These three were several lengths behind the Diver. Goldsborough seventh, then FitzYattendon, the Arrow, After Dark, Dagworth, Lapidist, and Lurline in straggling’ order. Time—3min. 37sec. So great was the crush in the enclosure that it was impossible to find room for half those desirous of getting seated. The dresses were most gorgeous —light blue, lavender, and pink predominated. The course was hard, but in fair order. AUCKLAND CUP. We are indebted to a private telegram for the following Cup weights :
